It ain't as glamourous as you'd think. Lots of hurry up and wait type stuff, some pretty big egos to contend with and some of the most catastrophically inept organisation I've ever witnessed. Still, seeing the finished product is alway fun and there are much worse jobs out there.

Be a whore and get to know as many people as possible in the industry. Hook up with your local screen agency and take advantage of any courses they have on offer and attend networking events.

You could know everything about the industry, but if you don't know anyone you won't do well.

Heh!

Funny, there's a bit of crossover between the stuff Doug's worked on and my place.

Was speaking to the HP location manager last week!

ok,well, there are a few jobs that come under sfx, physical effects:(that i do)are things that happen in front of camera,,,,rain, wind, fire, snow, mechaincal rigs, pneumatics, hydraulics, pyrotechnics etc
then; visual effects: digital(computer based effects) CGI
; creature effects:make up and animatronics/puppets etc.
now in physical effects you need to be fit (lugging 47kg propane bottles up muddy hills at night is a usual!)and have at least basic engineering skills, we have to make what we use, you cant get it of a shelf. learn to weld, go on a pyro handling course is a good idea
If you contact the union BECTU and ask for the SFX branch they should be able to help you. it is rarely a job with any glamour and we can often be first in,last out and allways coverd in sh-t! i have had quite a few work related injuries and opperations, so bare that in mind.

But at the end of the day...its still a pretty cool job, and very satisfying to see it on the big screen.
