If you have all the parts spread out, you'll probably have to re-shim too... Here's a nice and well-written how-to on that.. Hope it helps!

I'm pretty ignorant* having never done this and just wondered: why the need to re-shim?

*actually, totally ignorant, an absolute ignoramus.......

That's not even a dumb question :D

Shimming is what makes the difference between a super-efficient gearbox and a very crappy one... If you shim your gearbox right, the gears can rotate freely without touching each other, and with as less friction as possible. Friction, grinding --> power loss! If they are shimmed too "loose", they will touch each other, if they're shimmed too "tight" you put a lot of stress on your motor and bearings... Off-factory almost every gearbox could use a re-shimming, although most of them work perfectly off the shelf. They are shimmed by factory standards, but two gearboxes are never the same, so some are shimmed very well, others aren't. Normally the cheaper you go, the less quality control, the more every part differs from "factory standards", and the less efficient "factory standard shimming" will be.

As I explain this it might look like off-factory mechboxes are put together badly but normally I don't crack a gearbox open unless there is something broken, or they've got a pretty good bunch of rounds through them. In both cases I take the opportunity reshim and de/regrease...

Some people have had great results (more ROF, less noise) with re-shimming, for others it seems like it didn't work. In any way, inform yourself, there a lots of good guides out there, also ones that explain a lot better the concept of shimming than I can

Shimming is a bit like rolling cigarettes... It takes a few tries before you get the hang of it :P

Ah! I get it now. Explains why re-shimming is really more of an art than a science. Cheers. I consider myself enlightened. :good: :D
