It's now varnished with clear car varnish, but it very scratch prone.

Have you done anything with the front end of your's. I've gone as far as I can now without making any changes to the front end, but I haven't worked out what to do yet. I was going to do a fake bayonet and bodge up a mount like the real thing, but after looking more closely at it, the pump is mounted further forward on the Mossberg than it is on the trench gun, so there ins't actually enough space to fit the bayonet attachment on.
I was lucky with mine. I managed to get a proper Tanaka heatshield with bayonet lug. It did take some modding (see "bodging") to the gun to get it to fit but, it looks ok.
