hi all
Started building a .30 cal browning using a m249 gearbox and would like some advice.
A few people on here have built one before so just wondered what feed system have they used, i.e. internal electric feed, ammo box feed.
Any help much appreciated, pics would be great.
Also how much do the tripods sell for?
cheers.
jay.
also how much do the tripods sell for.
Real ones, $379.95 (M2 .30 Cal. Tripod Less T&E & Pintle):

.30 cal pintles - $89.95 :

That last one has M2 tripods listed at $340-odd (but out of stock), as well as lots of other interesting stuff.
You're probably better of either making your own, which can be lighter, or going for the bipod version.
On the 2 Dog Company .30cals They are both fed from an external .30cal ammo box. Using the same internals found in the M249 mag box.
On Tripod, speak to e-company on here (ShadowWolf on Gunman). He has constructed one for his 30 cal which is an exact replica of a real one, but uses, a lighter metal.
Bipod version puts strain on the barrel when in use, like Matt said the Dog Co 30.Cals use M14 internals I think and feed from a box mag underneath. A bit like the Marine version which used an aircraft modified 30.Cal with the box mag already attached.
Probably best making your own tripod...I'm sure that Webby made his own, but I may be wrong.
Otherwise, I'm pretty sure Warren can source one for you, £150 last time I heard.

Actually, the bipod puts strain on the barrel JACKET, not the barrel which in reality should be floating (I think it's part of the recoil mechanism, just like the M2HB).
Or you can speak to http://www.air-sharp.com/616cad.html and buy a set of .30 and .50 plans. The site owner used to custom make Browning MGs to order until they got sniffy and made him stop. However I think you can still buy the plans.
cheers guys.
think i will go for box feed as there is not much room inside the gun, can the ammo boxes be mounted on the side of the gun?
regarding the tripod i think i will have a go at building one unless i can find one that comes up real cheap
jay
can the ammo boxes be mounted on the side of the gun?
IIRC, it's the same setup as the M2HB - There are no fixings on the gun for a box.
The ammo box, where used, would be fixed to the mount, not the gun, or on the ground/table/whatever next to it. The belt would go in loose. Aircraft fits had ducting from the box to the gun.
o.k cheers, i guess i could make a cradle to mount the box right next to the gun.

Crazy stuff here, including a "Gatling" style crank-trigger for semi-auto Brownings, and a 1919 A4 / MG3 (ahem, MG42) Mount Adaptor!

But it's not an M2HB, it's not the same shape, size or calibre...and not all ammunition in planes was universally fed via ducts, in smaller planes like the Dauntless they used fitted box magazines which had the belt in.
This is a aircraft 30.Cal machinegun, modded for use on the ground, it uses a box magazine fitted to the bottom. This is also the configuration which one of the Dog Co. 30.Cal's uses and looks brilliant. Best person to contact is Doug as he's the one that made it.

and looks brilliant.
Really? From what angle? I think that's got to be one of the ugliest looking guns I've ever seen.
When I want your opinion - I'll tell you what it is!
Looks brilliant when you're watching Doug hose Germans with it right next to you haha. Still think it looks cool.

He must have more in his eye than just beauty!
Shoot and scoots one runs like the old school M60, hopper in the top above the hop and barrel feeding down into the mech for an autowinder and into the hop unit, works well providing the gun isnt tilting backwards!
Having an external magazine is a bit pointless in my opinion, the gun is too inflexable to move. (Saw this at road to Caen)
If you want it in an external mag, have the ammo box attached to the gun (a bit farb but practical) running a hose into the side of the gun looks a bit pants and doesnt work too well from what ive seen.
Warren can make you a bipod, thats what he did with mine.
cheers webby, have pm'd warren and will probably go with mounting a box on the side.
have made a start but still a long way to go, here are some pics. will use different screws but that is all i could find at the moment.
That looks absolutely excellent! Stunning work mate.
