Now it's a question which has vexed me: How does having an extra few inches of inner barrel give extra acuracy?
Assuming two airsoft guns have different length barrels, and both have the same muzzle velocity (for aguments sake 350fps), why would the one with a longer barrel be more "consistent" or"accurate"? After all, the BB is already spinning at the hop and it leaves the barrel at the same velocity.
Is this just an airsofter myth or is there a good reason? Any physics /mechanical engineers out there who can shed some light?
Cheers
Ranj
As far as I'm aware barrel length has very little effect on accuracy or range IN AIRSOFT, because hop up creates most of the range, and a good hop will give consisency/ accuracy. However there is a bit of a difference in super long/ super short barrels on accuracy, compare a pistol to a rifle for example.
The real crux of the matter is no matter what you do to an airsoft gun, within reason, it is still a small 6mm plastic ball and No rifling in the barrel. I think most accurecy is achieved by having a good hop. Ask Dadio for his opinion on the matter he explained a very good argument regarding Tight barrels versus a normal one.
here's my take on it and it'l cause a row im sure, firstly hop...... deep intake of breath, does not increase range,in fact provided you angle the gun up you will get better range and accuracy without hop, what hop does is give a flatter trajectory by makeing a lower pressure above the bb but it also causes drag, also the spin from hop is in the wrong direction to stabilize flight for accuracy.hops advantage is usability and simulation of real gun trajectory whitch in the range we operate at woul be nearly flat.you can also prove thar velocity at the muzzle is less with hop on versus hop off due to the slowing of the bb as it is squeezed through the hop chamber, its why some sites like "the mall" crono guns with the hop off for a real reading because if your gun is hot all you need do is adjust the hop to max for the crono in order to sneek it through.
barrels, now theres two schools of thought here and i think the phisics is more hazey ,firstly the regular idear that the longer and tighter bore the barrel the better.what actually happens on a well set up gun is that the bb doesent touch the barrel at all after the hop but is cushoned all around by air being forced around it,it takes a little distance after the disturbance of being squeeze through the hop before the bb stabilizes, from what ive heard around 300-330mm is long enough to achive this, with a tighter barrel it can happen quicker but once its stable then the barrel needs be no longer.
however once the bb leaves the barrel it can begin to go off course, now think of being 20 meters away from your target,if you have a 20 meter barrel so long as your aim is good you cant miss, with an unrifled barrel the shorter it is than the 20 meters the less accurate it becomes.
to illustrate all ive just said look at the performance of a stock tm m14 ,it only shoots 280 fps through a regular barrel but for range and accuracy takes some beeting.
so to sum up a 330mm barrel with 6.04 bore is just about all you need, longer if its not a tight bore up to 400mm maybe ,what really does improve things is high quality 0.25 bb's my choice excel ,i never use anything else unless im despirate,if you look at the bb's that tm give in the little bag with the gun they are 0.25,its what they work best with and if tight bore's were really that mutch better tm would fit them, they invented the aeg as we know it.
so there ive said it now shoot me down.

Give me a big enough hammer and a place to stand and I could fix the world.
i'll kill a man in a fair fight or if i think he's going to start a fair fight or over a woman or.......
a problem shared is a problem halved ,but an advantage shared is no advantage at all
if a job's not worth doing then its certainly not worth doing well
from my experience of all my upgrades,
tighter & longer barrel increases acuracy slightly but everyone seems to forget they also increase FPS. If you want you gun a tad more powerful no need to crack open a gearbox buy a tighter (or if possible longer) barrel.
Prometheus, Madbull and Systema are all good choices!
agreed ive seen 15fps after fitting a tight bore of the same length

i agree tightbore does increase fps but when i compare my SLR with original length and doing 320fps to my mates SLR carbine (just foregrip and then flash hider) doing 350fps ther is a huge difference a good 10meters (thats big for me atleast) but maybe thats just in that particualr case...
Kiwi airsofter, just pew-pewing.
