I tried a variant on the above, but used mahogany floor stain over a tan base. Main thing to be careful of if using furniture wax is that it takes the stain off again if it isn't completely dry.... It takes a long time to dry fully when used on plastic (days).

The wax gives a lovely finish though, but I'm buggered if I'm stripping it all off and re-doing the stain again.

The fire blacking also gives a really good finish, but wear gloves or you'll end with black fingernails for weeks. I'm too impatient for gloves, and my black fingernails have finally grown out now.
