I read on another site that the German army had a shed load of BRENs which they picked up from Dunkirk. The site went on to say that - They were redesignated 7.7mm Maschinengewehr (MG) 138(e). Anyone know if this is true or a load of old rubbish?

The Germans used anything they could get their hands on, any weapon captured in quantity was given a new designation by them. Also the Germans used a lot of Checkoslovakian ZB31's which was what the Bren was based on. The ZB31 looked like a Mk1 with a ribbed barrel and a straight mag.

my dad says that his section took german prisoners at falaise armed with lee enfields and US rifles, so i dont doubt they used bren guns.

thats actually true germans captured weapons and put them in service for their own, in early days SS supose to have the worst weapons I have seen pics of them whit mauser broomhandle and suport machineguns and stuff were equip captured germans gave designation names cuz the could send refactions for those guns if they have them in stock in the end of the war volksturm used many of these captured weapons
