Hello all. I'm looking at upgrading my agm sten mk2 but am unsure as to which version parts I should buy. I have read that the gearbox is a v7 that takes v3 parts. Does this mean I should be looking at a v3 cylinder head, for example?
Regards,
Ralph

It is a version 7 but in many way's unique , the cylinder head is a unique part that cannot be directly replaced ,the cylinder is a standard AEG part ,the piston has to be a half tooth piston ,stock gears should fit except ultra high torque as they won't fit ,can't remember what type motor right now .hope that helps.

Give me a big enough hammer and a place to stand and I could fix the world.

Actually that helps that a lot. I have already ordered a guarder polycarbonate piston but I can return that and buy a half tooth version.
Just to confirm before I try to order, the spring guide would need to be for a version 7 and NOT a version 3?
Regards,
Ralph

Yes version 7 spring guide ,its basically a v7 with a unique cylinder head and motor mounting and using stock gears rather than the usual v7 ones .

Thanks a lot dadio for the information.

The Sten is actually a very good gun out of the box. I would recommend doing as little to change it as possible.
The gearbox has plastic bushings, it would be worth changing these for metal to improve its life.
You mentioned elsewhere that you may need to have a semi auto gun for CQB, if you add a Burstwizard mosfet, you can program the number of shots per trigger pull. These are either just plugged in between the battery and gun or can be wired into the gun permanently which then means that the trigger contacts will last longer as it will only send a signal current through the trigger. These are not 100% effective at getting single shot only, but most sites are happy with an occasional double shot.

The Sten is actually a very good gun out of the box.
The AGM MP40 is too although I've found the odd one will need a little tlc to get it back up to scratch, Always good to have a reliable fall back shooter for emergencies.
My sten arrived yesterday and I got some hands on experience with the gun. Not that I'm an expert on such things but it felt really nice and performed well on my makeshift firing range in the garden.
I'll need honest I had already ordered a tonne of parts to replace the stock parts but after what I've read here, I'm really apprehensive about modifying the gun beyond changing the bushings. Maybe I'll use the tightbore barrel and hop bucking as I'm looking really to increase range and accuracy.
I will give a burst wizard another looking but I think I've sold myself on a hi power now.

If you read enough forums about airsoft, you will find lots of threads about people who decide to upgrade their gun and spend a fortune only to find it just never performs as well as it did before they started. Sometimes upgrades work wonders but I tend to stick to the principle that 'if it ain't broke...'
My experience with my Sten is that it will hit people accurately at ranges that they can't return fire from. It's unlikely that any upgrade would improve on that but it may be that I just got lucky with mine.
The Burstwizard does help with resisting the urge to empty the mag on full auto, I usually have mine set to a 3 round burst just to conserve ammo.

I think I've been sucked into the world of never ending upgrades. I'm an engineer so I can't help but tinker with things. As I say I'll change the barrel, bushings and hop bucking then call it a day. I can always return the other parts.
I've had a little practice round the house with a view to using it in cqb and I think I will get the burst wizard now. I'll probably still get a browning cos I love the hi power but hey ho.

Ralph

Got to agree with the above comments, they are great out the box
. Don't touch it unless it breaks. I changed tho hop rubber for a TM one and fitted a Prometheus barrel, never had a problem with it in 6 years. The only thing I did was add some extra screws around the heat sheild to receiver joints and the rear stock to receicer ring, just for added security. The only thing I would recommend is putting threadlock on all the screws, paying close attention to the mag catch area.

I wouldn't even tweak the Sten to improve the range - it is a room-clearing weapon after all, so range and accuracy is entirely secondary to its purpose. Put in a weak spring and a strong battery to get a nice, high ROF, and fire from the hip. Problem solved ![]()
FYI the piston is not a half tooth but a V7 compatable one. Full sized teeth, just without the extra material on the left side of the rack. If you're goint to tinker, be sure to shim from the bevel gear rather than the more basic spur first method.

Well I've changed the barrel, bushings and hop bucking. It does seem to be more accurate than before. I also wiped out the green grease in the gearbox and lubricated with Teflon grease instead.
I'll get a shim set next to get the gears lined up properly.

Ralph

do the shimming real soon , i'd never change bushes without re shimming .
