wrt the OP, my first German 'rifle' was a lightly converted M14, made up into a sort of G43. I just made up a new flash hider and front stock top. I did try cutting down some magazines as well but that ended in disaster, so I just use stock M14 mags. It also converts into an SVT-40 with a different flash hider, stock top and some bits of drilled metal. Both jobs were well within my highly limited DIY skills.
Warren at Shoot & Scoot has loads of old M14 flash hiders from Garand conversions, but I got mine from Sergent Heide.
I remain to be convinced of the merits of gas guns of any sort, be they CO2 or normal gas, my experience with them has always been one of pain, but I'm just not very handy mechanically. If only someone would actually make a decent K98 springer, but in the meantime I shall continue to use my VSR conversion.
Also second the recommendation about going for a 350 fps rifle, or at least retain that option even if it involves some swapping of parts.
