I've been looking at various scopes to fit onto my k98 but it seems that most of the airsoft versions fit along way down the barrel on the wooden stock but I was always under the impression that the real scope was attached around the bolt area with side brackets so you could still operate the bolt?

Am i just being stupid and missing something or is this just an airsoft variation?

There were different scope models - do some google and wikipedia research on the "ZF4" and "ZF41" scopes. That should sort out the confusion :)

The Scope your refering to is the 1.5x Zf-41 sharpshooters scope which fits on a rail to the side of the rear open sights.

The airsoft version is a poor representation of the Real scope and with such a small magnification, both are a waste of time IMO although by 1945 the germans had produced over 100,000 of the things.

The proper sniper scopes like the ZF39 did fit to turret mounts fitted to the main breach block or to a detachable side mount by the breach. the weapons would be modifed to have these mounts fitted.

Checkout this site for everything you wanted to know about the Kar98:

“I wanted to come to the Volga at a specific location at a specific city. By chance it carries the name of Stalin himself. So don’t think I marched there for this reason – it could carry another name – but because there is a very important goal... this goal I wanted to take – and you know – we are very modest, we have it already."

It is on your perseverance, staunchness, fighting skill and readiness to discharge your duty to the country that the defeat of the German-fascist army and the liberation of the Soviet land from the Hitlerite invaders depend! We can and must clear the Soviet land of Hitlerite vermin."

Speaking of scopes for the K98, I have two of them by D-boys (one with plastic stock and another with wood stock) and I would like to put the ZF-41 scope on one of them. Who makes a good reproduction of it and where can I get it?
I have been told that G+G makes it but it does fit the K98 by Tanaka and I do not know if it does fit the D-boys too. Any help will be very much appreciated!
A few words on me. I am new to this forum. I have a 1943 GPW Jeep and I collect military rifles both soft air and dummy (as produced by the Spanish Denix), I love military vehicles and I am a member of quite a few military vehicles associations. Have been to Beltring W&P and to Detling Military Odyssey. I also collect die cast models in 1/43 scale. Also have a great interest in military railways up to WWII.

Viva Arms makes a relatively decent repro. Looks much better than either the Tanaka or G&G which neither even closely resemble a ZF41 IMHO. Not sure if the VA is available anymore though.

Tanaka Kar 98k, AGM MP44 x2, Marushin MP40 GBB, AGM MP40, Maruzen Walther P38, WA Walther P38.

Great Polish Kar98K link.

The Mauser 98k with 4x Dialytan scope, made by Gustloff Werke, seems possible. It seems as if the scope mount is more or less the same mount as used today with sporting rifles. Worth looking into, and maybe a bit of steel wool could make a modern scope look right.

Or this may be better

Complete with waffenamt and everything. For a VSR10 conversion this could work. Does anyone know if this was used by the Wehrmacht, or is it something else?

This appears to be Wehrmacht, but expensive to produce and rather rare.

At less than 20 euro, a bit of sanding paper and some filing on the knobs might render a decent look-alike?
