colourwise its up to personal choice really but i think at least a mild stain just to give it a golden creamy colour as the wood on these stocks is really pale, personally i like a really ritch nutty brown.but dont oil it till after staining or you'll have to rub it down again.

have picked up a tin of Duratough coloured varnish in natural beech (satin) should bring out the grain nicely
decided to leave to beech, the wood/grain was slightly red after loads of sanding, looked like it had a shade of pink when the light hit it
rubbed the stock down again and used american walnut over peruvian mahogany, very very happy with it gonna wax this stock instead of the hales oil I used on the gas version
also polished the butt plate and rear stock round bits? or whatever they are called ?
i used a lot of ally black on this one untill i saw it was allmost exaxctly like the paint finish of the original and ive only done it on the parts that need it now as its not worth it, plus after removeing the paint the front barrel piece it was a verry loose fit and i had to wrap tape around it to take out the slack.

I tried the alloy black on the outer barrel with the gas K98, wasnt really that impressed either, ended spraying the barrel with Plasti-kote fast dry enamel, going to use the same stuff on the springer version, all the cast parts on the original dboys where treated with phillips professional blue, was very happy with the finish
stock is now ready to varnish, just wondering whether to go for a polyurethane satincoat or mattcoat on this one, used hales gun stock oil on the gas version, put on 4 coats and it looks like it still needs another 10!
oiling stocks takes days, the first few coats go in quick but a few days later it looks bone dry again ,been oiling this one periodically for over a week now and is getting a nice look now.
i dropped one of the plastick guide rings that the bolt slides inn onto the floor in my shed earlier... 1.5 houres sweeping ... i eventually found it in the bin the language got bad.
i re-made the bolt that holds the bolt handle on today ,previously i'd just copied the dboys rod that held the safety cluster onto the bolt adding a thread to go into the vsr bolt but it was prone to bending.ive re-designed it so its not held on by only a grub screw ,its a whole lot better now while still haveing a functioning bolt lock as per the dboys original.mutch happier now
now all ive got to do is cut the detail for the stripper clip and shape the breech a little and its finished

clipper strip hole has been done on mine along with the side cut, just need to shape the bolt release and fit that next
has anyone else used varnish on theirs?
i was so close tonight that i failed to stop,i think its finally finished pending some garden plinking tomorrow when its light.

looks good
still need to put the extra aluminium band round the front of the receiver on mine as well, was it easy to do?
easy if you have a lath,i didnt use the dboys bit, it looked a little labour intensive i just turned one up instead, probably took just as long as fileing out the bdoys one but a lot less sweat and a better fit the colours dont look so different in the flesh, just the flash but the ally i made it out of went a nice blue where as the pot metal went blackish

nice
I have some 3mm thick aluminium sheet with which I will make a collar to go over the top of the vsr receiver
the ally sheet is a better bet than re-shapeing the dboys bit,oh by the way i found that round bit behind the bolt handle from the old vsr clone that you were after while sweeping the shed, if its of any use to you now let me know and its you'rs.

looks good Gav nice colour might have to have another go at mine
you just have to be brutal when sanding, there's a white layer under the varnish and its waxy so its all got to go before staining, then tons of oil for days.
