well it's all in bits for hopefully the last time so i can fit the front sight assembly ,just shortened the inner barrel to improve the smoke flow, clear lacquered the outer barrel so it don't rust ,it's really a whole host of small jobs and tidying up then final assembly and delivery.

Thoroughly enjoy checking up on this thread from time to time. Some fantastic scratch building. Look forward to seeing a video or something once this project is complete.

found a supply of brighter yellow led's ,far better and wont need a yellow lens to colour them ,fitted just one to my bren and its wey better, will need to mount them on a heat sink but i can point them straight out the muzzle as well rather than an angle, also re jigged the smoke generator element so it produces more smoke.

new led array on heat sink, this also enables me to fit a 4th led as its far more compact.

second shot's not so clear but its with the booster over the top

not wired up yet but you get the idea ,also has a grub screw to mount onto the inner barrel so it cant move into path of bb's.

Taking power for the smoke generator from post-LED cluster, effectively placing them in series with the smoke generator, causing a high draw through them?

Where'd you get your smoke generator from gain, Gav? I think the Vickers might need a little more realism added too (with all design credit being directed back to you, naturally!). It's running a Ver.1 gearbox (FA-MAS) and there's loads of space to mount a push-to-make rod switch in the large threaded hole at the rear of the spring guide, which at the moment triggers my semi-rotational cocking handle "blowback" solonoid :)

the power for the smoke and led's are separate lines ,the led's 3.5v and the smoke 11.1v both feeds taken from the lipo battery re charging lead(very low power for both) the wires for both have to go through a fairly tight channel next to the barrel and i think i stripped them a bit with constant tinkering so that it fed 11.1v to the led's when i turned on the smoke, they worked beautifully till then ,so just need to re wire it with fresh wire and the new led's are on next day from rs components.after that its just some spit and polish and she's done.
the smoke generator is from a heng long 1/16 rc tank and is about £9 delivered ,they have to be stripped out of the housing and the element re configured so it runs over the wick rather than be wrapped in the wick as that reduces the smoke to just coming from the ends.it is rather wasteful as the housing is complete with motorized pump etc that's just scrap afterwards but you cant use the pump as its noisy and bulky , if you were a wiz with electrics then you could make the smoker out of resistive wire but i'm just not that clever and they are cheep enough.

Oh bugger, sorry to hear your rework will have to be rereworked.

Yay! :happyclap: Glad all is not lost and quickly fixable.

Is the smoke oil used the same as they use in disco smoke machines (viscosity like water) or like the stuff used in model trains (viscosity like a light oil)? What's the wick made from - glass fibre matting, or expendable/replaceable cotton wad?

the smoke oil is very light almost like water (i have no experience of disco smoke oil), the wick seems to be like thick cotton string not glass fiber except the thin strand that the element coil's round ,that may be glass fiber.again the smoke oil is only £3.50 a bottle from ebay so pretty cheep.

all rewired but could not find the short where i thought it would be so i have insulated the array instead just to be extra safe, led's not coming till tomorrow due to my old card being registered to the shop and it failing to go through... oops .so hopefully there should be a you tube clip tomorrow .

piss, pox and pestilence .....given up on those ultra bright led's £30 down the pan at my cost.there must be some strange effect going on as they work perfectly out of the gun just hanging out the front with the same wiring and with the smoke on but as soon as they are inserted they blow instantly, there must be a weird inductive effect going on once they are enclosed ,some sort of flux induction caused by the rapid switching of current that once enclosed affects the led's,anyway i went back to the old led's and yellow filter and it all works again . anyway here's a couple of vid's, i'm afraid the camera i used does not captuse the flashing almost at all but to the naked eye its there, also its a sunny day but it does show the smoke pretty well.or at least i'll post it up when youtube is good and ready.
