I'm after some advice WRT cleanup of original wood and metal parts.

Specifically, I have an M1928 Thompson butt that needs the wood cleaning up a bit, and some rust removing from the metalwork.

Ascorbic acid works on rust removal. (from home brew shops, Holland & Barrett, ebay, probably Boots - Hammerite Rust Remover Dip/Gel is ascorbic acid if you want something with a known name on)

As for wood, use very fine wire wool to abraid the surface, and then treat it with thin coats of linseed oil applied with a rag. Wipe it on - wipe it off - let it dry - repeat. You'll find more indepth details buy Googling: "refinishing gun stock" or such-like. Asorbic acid is one of the main components of 'Cillet Bang', I use 'Flash''s version (Flash Power, I think), it's not got any pink dyein it and is a little stronger, but both are weak enough that you won't cause any damage with it unless on purpose.

birchwood casey cold blueing kits are fantastick ,they include a rust remover as part of the kit ,a little practice and the results are fab for removeing rust and re-blueing .they also do stock restoration kits ,ive not tried those but if thay are as good then have a go.
the only problem is the results are so good things look brand new and you might want to wether it again.

Thanks.

I assume the metalwork would need to be removed from the wood before working on either?

I'm not too concerned with it looking brand new - During WW2, the guns would be relatively new anyway. Plus, I've got new, repro fore grips anyway.

Wood finish kit on ebay, looks to be a comprehensive set. There's quite a few suppliers of various products in that range.

Phosphoric acid for rust....or coke and similar fizzy drinks given phosphoric acid is an ingredient of such drinks :)

best to strip it down ,its easier to get a good result if its striped plus i dont know what the chemicals would do to wood, mind you it doesent damage fingers suprisingly.does take a bit of practice to get good results ,you really have to work the stuff in till you get the results you want .i agree with the new look ,these guns would have mostly been quite new back in the 40's and soldiers would be reprimanded for allowing their gun getting rusty or damaged ,but some people want that wethered look.
