I've just read that the TM Thompson hop unit doesn't have the 2 securing tabs that the Cyma one does.
How is the hop secured in the upper receiver?
Can a TM Hop unit be used in a Cyma receiver? If so, are there any modifications needed to do so?
they do have the two screws secureing the hop but i think i remember hearing somewhere that the positioning of the holes is different so the two look verry similar but arnt compatible as a direct swap

Are you sure?
I came across this:

Touted as "M1A1 Replacement HOP unit", but it has no tabs in the photo, so I went looking and came across this:

That was a good pic of the TM hopup unit. It IS different from the Cybergun/CYMA unit. Cyma has made an improvement! There is a bar moulded into the unit that spans the upper reciever side to side with a screw at each end/side. The bar secures the hopup body to the upper reciever.
You are right when comparing the Cyma to the "budget" Thompson hops, though.
you can just see in the picture the hole is only a half hole ie semicircle just visible on the top edge and ive checked in my tm thommy definatly a two screw fitting,i cant be sure where i heard about the compatibility issue but its kind of backed up by my experience of cyma thompson gearboxes i used to make sterlings haveing a longer nozzle than my tm thompson gearbox, but i just cant remember where i heard about the differences and ive never had a cyma hop to compare so i'll admit i could be wrong but i've got a canny memory for stuff like this.mind you for the price its no great loss if it dont work.it may just be that the cyma has a full hole type moulding that would just have to be clipped to fit a tm and a tm hop would need a washer to fit a cyma.or i could be wrong.

Just had a little poke around as I have a CYMA and a TM sitting here. Been a while since i have opened up the TM and I haven't personally taken down the CYMA but what i can see from the outside they are both the same.
Top is TM M1a1 Bottom is CYMA 1928 Version
Hope this helps.
Stu
Thanks guys.
I've ordered one anyway.
If it doesn't fit my Cymas, I'll probably use it on the M1928 receiver that is currently hidden inside a solid block of aluminium.

It's something I've been planning for probably 2 years. Now I have a decent milling machine (Sieg Super X3L) it may actually get to the top of the tuit list. What's holding it up currently is not having some of the milling cutters needed to make it look right.
Plan B (and looking more attractive every day) is to do what Angel (?) did and get a "Display receiver" from IMA and mill that out.
Plan C = Mosquito Molds kit...
The unit arrived today - it came complete with the inner barrel.
Now I need to find a dismantling guide...
