So anyway I had the old Tanaka out last weekend for a skirmish and noticed that the outer barrel is a little loose. With some pressure it turns in its mount meaning the foresight quickly gets knocked out of place if you are moving through underbrush etc. The inner barrel isnt moving just the mock outer barrel. Any thoughts on what to do with this (I am not sure where on the gun the barrel is secured?).

On another note I have seen people mention 2 mods to their tanakas - a new hop rubber and an extended nozzle? Are these necessary and/or easy upgrades. I have changed the original crappy low power bolt internals with a Hong Kong sourced G-version kit - should I be thinking of any other mods?

Lastly - what ammo should I stuff in it? I tried using Straight 0.43s (the silver ones) on the weekend but couldnt see my shots after they had gone a few metres so adjusting my aim was all but impossible!

Cheers,

Josh

This happened to me at Varsity, so I'm interested what comes up - Boshman, I think, suggested that there might be a grub screw between the barrel and bayonet lug? :?:

Actually, It seems its not even held on with a screw! This from the US ww2aa boards:

"Tanaka Mausers are fine when new. I've got a gripe about the soft metal and the barrel being two-piece, the first one being held on by a single screw, the second by friction and glue. Once the gun starts to age, the barrel will become loose, taking away the use of the front sight"

Sounds like a job for a bit of Araldite!

So don’t think I marched there for this reason – it could carry another name – but because there is a very important goal... this goal I wanted to take – and you know – we are very modest, we have it already."

I stripped my K98 at the weekend to change the hop. I presume the G33 is the same assembly in which case, yes, the outer barrel is held on with a single grub screw. It's easy enough to fix with some loctite or similar but you will have to drop the metalwork out of the wooden stock. Don't araldite it though!

Thinking about it you can probably get to it just by taking front grip off, if you can do that on the G33 - I can't remember!

Agreed CW, I wasn't suggesting aralditing the grub screw :slap: , just using it to re-glue the front section of the outer barrel if it is indeed only glued to the rear part which is in turn held on by the grub screw. I dont actually own a Tanaka so I'm just relaying what I've read
