I just got this email from one of the guys at Ryton Arms, one of the major suppliers of deacs in this country. It was in response to a request for a wooden spares for a Mosin rifle to convert a springer, and i'll be honest, the reply has surprised me:

Thanks for the email. Sorry but we do not have any spare external parts for the Mosin Nagant 1891/30 - all our weapons are complete but it would not be illegal to purchase a deactivated weapon and take-off all the furniture and reassemble on an airsoft. You would obviously be left with a deactivated barrel, receiver and bolt but it may be a solution to your problem.

(bold added by me for emphasis)

to hear this from one of the main suppliers of deactivated guns has confused me somewhat. He seems to imply that you can take items off a deac to put onto an airsoft, as effectively it's not reactivating a deac, but dismantling one, which isn't illegal.

Has anyone anywhere got the definitive lowdown on this in print, or am i going to have to get in touch with the police, as i do have a few contacts i can speak to.

I think I'll leave it to Ryton Arms to become the test case with that interpretation of the law.

I think that the guideline is that on the de-act certificate it says, incapeable of firing a projectile. As long as you do not use any of the working parts you should be fine.
Thats why you can not put a gearbox in a weapons reciver.

So you'd need to remove the entire receiver, trigger mechanism, spring, bolt, barrel etc.

Essentially you'd just be left with the wood kit.

So why not strip down the woodwork and get a carpenter type (or have a go yourself if you have the skill) to copy it for you, then dremmel out any bits you need to fit the donour rifle, givving youa de-act and an airsoft gun. Worst case sell the de act after you have finished with it. Or keep it, you never know when you might want one, besides the price will only go up, when I bought a Moisin Nagant 8 years ago it was

but with all the ancillaries like the sights, metal strapping, bolts, trigger guard and all the other fiddly bits that are awkward to make but are needed to make the gun look 'right' as a replica Mosin/K98, depending on what i decide on.

I have a lathe, milling machine and all the other kit to make a steel housing for the airsoft mechanism to fit it into the stock and still look like the original. Hell, i think i've even got some blueing compound left somewhere as well.

Plus i've already got a deac Mosin and K98 lying around here.

Mate, I have a MN 1891/30 in my mum's shed. The mechanism is broken, but the wood is OK, and it has the sights, bands etc intact. I don't have the ramrod.

You can have it all for

I'm not, I'm afraid. I could take a wee journey down to Notts one weekend, though, I have a mate in MK. Kill two birds with one stone. Or I could send, which might be quicker.

In which case, can someone give me advice in how to wrap up and send a full length rifle!?

Dead on, mate.

Can someone remind me the dates for CR? Looked on the 'times/dates' thread, but couldn't see any dates. Hope to get the rifle tomorrow, but I'm on holiday from thursday, so I'd need to pass the rifle to WhosWill? by then. By the way, dieselmonkey, a cheque to WhosWill? will be just fine (my name is Michael Kavanagh).

My email: mrtayto@o2email.co.uk

Can pick up mails to that off my BlackBerry anytime, so you can get me regarding this.
