Hey guys, im in the middle of an upgrade to my S&S garand. I have a new spring to put in the gearbox, but im not very confident about doing it. I've never touched the internals of a gearbox before. As ive always had them done professionally.
Its about time i learnt. I've stripped it back to just the gearbox minus the motor. How easy is it for someone with no experience, to take apart a gearbox then be expected to put it back together again, and it work?
Im toying with the idea of taking it to wolf armouries and have someone show me how its done.
EDIT* Version 7 is what i meant to type
Well, the M14 uses a Version 7 gearbox for starters! If you've never worked on a gearbox, a V7 is not a good one to cut your teeth on.
When I want your opinion - I'll tell you what it is!
Maybe i'll shoot down to camden on monday then. As i need it for a game next wkend.
As a fellow noob who has actually managed it a few times I would suggest the following.
1. Watch an instructional video on youtube, they're pretty easy to find. If you can't find an m14 one then there're plenty for say thompson or AK gearboxes. The general principles are the same I think.
2. Put it in a plastic bag when you open it in case all the springs and gears explode everywhere.
3. Have an attractive assistant standing by, you'll need three hands to get it back together again.
Hey guys,
I chose to go to wolf armouries today in the end. Got the spring done for a fiver. Well ive just rebuilt the Garand and its not firing. It sounds like the Gearbox is jammed. When you pull the trigger it just goes clunk and the motor doesn't spin.
Any idea's?
Battery could be flat.
Spring could be too powerful
or could be put together slightly wrong... take it apart... make sure everything is moving okay and put it back together. This has occasionally happened to me.
Its a systema M110 Spring. When i spoke to the shop they said it would raise the FPS to 330. Its got stock gears, but they are metal as its an AGM.
Battery should have been fully charged a few weeks ago. Though i'll check it.
Could the alignment of the gears between the gearbox and motor be off? Because i didnt check it before i stuck it back on.
110!!! ffs... a 100 spring can take it to over 350fps in some cases.
That could well be the reason it won't turn over.
Take it apart... put the old spring in... try again.
When it was chrono'd at Carentan is was shooting at 260fps. So thats why i went for the M110 I needed a slightly bigger increase, to get it to 330-340fps.. I hope its not that...Seems strange the guy in the shop didnt say anything about it.
Sorted it...I think there was a loose connection to the motor, once i pulled the plugs around it worked. Just went into panic mode as i need it for the wkend.
Cheers for the advice yith.
I'm amazed they gave you a 110... It won't do your battery life much good!
Anyway, pleased its sorted.
Got a 3300mah battery in there so it should last a while. It doesb't seem to be shooting over the limit..but i'll test it in better light
Well done, if you can rebuild a V7 anything else is easy. I'm in the process of rebuilding my TM V7, got new gears, metal bushings, a bearing spring guide and a Systema 110 spring ready to go, took the gearbox apart carefully - or so I thought - and somehow broke the tappet. So waiting for a replacement to arrive from Fire Support as I write this!
