Heh, my Thompson takes some beating, range-wise! Anyhoo, my suggestion would be an M14 (read my first post here for reasons viewtopic.php?f=13&t=10251 ). You would have to go second-hand to hit your price mark for a TM, the CMYA one has seemingly vanished from the UK at the moment.
The Full M1 is available from S&S for 300 quid with postage, or a 'Wood' M14 will give you the option of modifying it later.
Edit: Chomley was faster on the reply then me, but I will still post to add a further vote to his suggestion.
I guess it's partly dependent on what kit you have or are going to use. Most SMGs have very similar range, but I find them perfectly adequate. Some assault rifles may have slightly longer range (or maybe that should be accuracy, since they're all firing roughly the same FPS).
You've got nothing to ein, zwei, drei, vier
Tried searching online ?

Fire Support have two TM M14's in stock @ £335
Bugger the 'small rail mount' though!
definatley a rifle ,from what i saw at sealion there was far to few rifles and far to many assault rifles and smg's.my next purchase must be a bolt action because im as bad as everybody else ,its just difficult to welcome the thaught of being under automatick fire with only a single shot to reply with but that was the reality most faced back in the day.

Give me a big enough hammer and a place to stand and I could fix the world.

I agree with this and mainly because of one thing Prometheus Barrels. I would suggest anyone fit them in any gun they are amazing. (the 8mm will unfortunatly miss this one out) Guranteed to give you better range, more accuracy and a louder "pop" when it comes out your gun. I would agree about sorting out a rifle, as thats on my to do list (after the 30 cal. Germans beware ) and shoot and scoot from all the reviews seem to be great.
Just a quick shout on the shoot and scoot Garand if i got hold of a real garand stock am i correct in thinking all i need is the metal kit on shoot and scoot and a m14 to finish off the look?
The way I see it you have 2 choices.
1) If your going to play axis at any point, an Axis weapon (mp-40 or Mp-44)
2) Stick with Allied, in which case not another SMG, go for the M14.
The MP-44 and M14 do outrage your standard SMGs even on airsoft.
The M14 can be converted in staged to look like an M1 Garand, SVT-40 or G-43.
You can use it as is ok with everyone, and fits in should you decide to do later periods.
With a bipod, it's a BAR.
If like me you can't shoot for toffee and have no safe place to practice, it is the better buy than a bolt action.
To the tune of "Mademoiselle from Armentières"
Napoleons army ran away, As you do
The guard stood firm for Frances Pride, As you do
They said the guard will stand and die
But we heard what their Colonel cried
It wasn't pretty I tell you.
