To avoid friendly fire, we will set a password at the event. If you issue a challenge and do not receive the correct reply, open fire immediately, no exceptions.
The correct sequence for a password challenge is as follows....
"Halt, advance one and be recognised!"
Let them come closer, keeping them covered and say "Halt!". Issue the challenge by calling out the first two letters of the password.
The password will consist of 2 "blocks" of letters, for example, the challenge may be "ALPHA, BAKER", to which the correct response may be "FOX, DOG".
If you receive the correct reply, call out "advance, friend". You still need to keep them covered to be certain, as the enemy may have discovered our password.
If you are challenged, do not make any sudden movements, or try to go to ground!

Another example 'JEDB' would be Challenge: Juliet Echo, Response: Dog Bravo

Yes, I'm a bit mystified by it.
I had it down as we have two words that are a challenge and response, for this example lets use: "OPERATION" AND "JEDBURGH".
Using Pete's method the challenge would be: "OSCAR", "PAPA"
The response would be: "JULIET", "ECHO"
Not sure which is correct really.
BTW Webby, make sure you don't mix up the old and new phonetic alphabet or you'll be shot! "Juliet", "Echo" and "Bravo" are the current one. "Dog" is the WW2 one. Either use "Delta", or "Jig", "Easy" and Baker".

First letters of the password makes more sence if it's 2 words.
It's letters, not words, it's perfectly simple, none of this "Flash, thunder" bollocks. Example (in this case, the password is BBDA)...
Sentry - "Halt! Advance and be recognised... BAKER BAKER".
Other - "DOG ABLE".
Sentry - "Advance, friend".

You could always right the code on your inside wrist with charcole then whipe it off quick if it looks like your going to get caught
