NO DPM please !

sorry thats how i feel  , worst comes to worst, lightweights and a post war woolley pulley with a red beret should suffice , although Warrens cheapie denisons are ok .

Yes, Guy... I'm happy to take Arnhem as my little baby... Gadge I'm sure can help as needed.. I may want help with props as needed as they're not really my forte... and of course signage! We must have street names etc!

Cheers - I could see I would be out of my depth trying to write this one ! Obviously happy to help in any way I can / am needed .

Liking what I read so far - especially opening it out a bit.

Films are always very tightly focussed, often inaccurate, and it may be a mistake to base games on a filmic story rather than the 'real' war. Sixty years on and the second war seems to be defined by war films - once given a catchy name it takes on a life all of it's own.

That said, the films are a useful peg to hang the games on, from a publicity point of view!

BTW, I wasn't critising using 'nuts' or comandos thing at all, small things like that makes a difference - just pointing out that while they played a big part in the film they had little significance in the real battle!

Yep it's going to be "a bridge too far" if we like it or not .

Point taken about the significance both in the battle and on Sunday . Just being a bit precious of my lil touches

Ok, i take your points about dpm smocks, i just felt the distintive bits of brit airborne were camo smocks and red berets.

I mean we allowed 'stritchtarn ' at the last one which has bigger all simularity to anything wwi german.

But i see your point

How much are warrens smocks again?

I was thinking sanjays were the cheapest but its another reason to give folk several months warning as they will need potentially two months to get one off him....

Warren was 50quid , and not in bad nick . Sanjays are better value , but then the buggeration factor of getting one .

BTW I may look to do Arnhem as a Brit Para as I have passable kit and a Sten , it seems a shame not to use it in it's most famous setting .

PS Think Stug idea maybe an idea too far, and relies on the 432 actually working, which can be a bit hit and miss . Other than that it's groovy .

Just been watching A Bridge Too Far... and got some more ideas

I suggest having a couple of "bridges" to capture... one for the british airborne (Arnhem) and one for the yanks (Nijmegen)... who'll also be airborne. The 432 if have it can represent the German Panzers and/or the British 30 Corps and would only be used towards the end of the event...

I imagine the germans being concetrated away from the bridges initially... between them... then the allies moving in from the woods to take the bridges and try and hold them.

All ideas to throw in the pot... it really depends on what happens about the sites we're interested in running it at.

LOL - trouble with films is they are character led, the real story is much, much bigger.

Anyhoo, this is Yith's and Gadge's baby so I'll keep out of your discussion and drop back in when you have the scenario posted up.

The two sources i metioned earlier are the best.

Initially the germans had no idea what the plan was, Arnhem to them wasn't part of the allied attack plan, they expected a river crosing or sea assault. It took them a while to relaise what wa sgoing on to be fair.

I thin an initial scenario should give the germans three of four points to defend and they have to split their forces as they see fit, evenly or all on one. The allies choose *one* as a drop zone, we dont tell the germans this and hit it wiht overwhelming force, this then becomes their ressuply and regen for the day.

further german regens come form 'entry points' representing the german end of the bridge etc.

Don't forget we have a load of US troops as well.. It may be best to have them have their own objectives rather than mixing in with the Brits.

Of course this depends on the size and configuration of the site...

I think thats far better

Also we can potentialy skew the numbers for arnhem.

If we *wanted* to we could do 15 places UK airborne. 25 places US airborne

50 places german

To keep the allies pressured all the time.

Altenrativley we just do the battle for the town itself

A mad one might be just to concentrate on Arnhem itslef and leave the US conitingenet out, it makes the event more restricitve but we could go for 15 places UK and 30 places german.

As UK kit will be harder to source makin it 'special' with limited places tneds to pull people into doing it more and ccreate a demand/desire.

My gut reaction though is to run an event with both UK and Amerians involved.

Few Thoughts ..

Far more yanks than brits on Sunday , not sure how representative that is of players out there ? Suggest Arnhem is associated with Paras , but still need to keep it inclusive for yanks

50 players on either side would be a lot to aim for and nearly twice the size of previous event . I'd look at quality not quantity , if you get both - extra bonus

From limited knowledge of the reality this looks to be a "meat grinder" urban game , rather than one of great tactics and movement

Suggest keep sides balanced, players will get pissed off if there is no way they can win because of the numbers .

Actually i just thought that i'd put in very high numbers.

Whihc leads me back to the original question do we market it as Arnhem or Market Garden

Yanks at Arnhem is a bit daft really....

If its an Arnhem game at say Phoneix urban then we keep it limited to 15 players uk, 25 german?

I say make numbers equal to the site capacity initially

We cann always close a side early if it looks like things are getting out of hand with bookings.

I also suggest that since its paras for the brits and that means stuff that Warren can supply we try and get a special deal for attendees of the event to buy kit off him or something...

Had a chat with Warren about denisons (etc)... he has 15ish belgian denisons in stock and about 20 sets of webbing...

He did suggest a possible discount for a bulk order.

That sounds good. If we work closely with Warren we need to make sure that wiht the webbing its not thats much more than what Sabre can offer though. I'd hate to make it look like we were favouring retailers, especially if truth be told that reatiler was not the best deal (i.e. webbing)

My advice would be to negotiate a discount for booked people with whatever supplier you like , rather than look to buy and sell , or worse look like we're a salesarm of them . "You must have a Denison and you can buy one from Warren" could be misinterpreted

TA works along similar lines, people think they are getting something for nothing which in effect they are, and suppliers get free advertising but the link between the two is loose .

Just athought .

Phoenix Urban dates for possible site visit:
Sunday 7th January
Sunday 21st January
Sunday 4th February
Sunday 18th February

Urban open days for proposed April game are:
Sunday 1st April
Sunday 15th April
Sunday 29th April
which leaves 8th and 22nd April potentially free for booking
although there is time to change an open day to a closed day esp. for us.
