Some interesting info there. Personally, I always find it more interesting if at least some facets of reality enter the plot.
Plus, NKVD in charge? nah. Would have been someone else in charge. With the NKVD standing behind him with a PPsH to make sure he did as he'd been ordered to by the Central Staff....

The place is real, it's on the border with Bellarus where a lot of the worst fighting took place.
NKVD ? Not sure , not important just added for flavour . From my research a lot of partisan bands were organised by regular Red Army by 1943, there were more like little armies than the French resistance.
And I can't believe you've not heard of the Bolshoi Kran Brigade. 
Anyhoo , this is 1st draft, if we can get some better details of a real engagement it would improve things.

Strated writing the story and er ......come across a problem here ?.
The infamous SS Kaminski Brigade was started and based in Bryansk until end 1943, indeed Kaminski himself was the local commander.....
Now I can ignore this, use this or what ? Suggestions ,

When the Nazi Germans occupied the Bryansk region during Operation Barbarossa campaign, Kaminski's classmate, engineer Constantine Voskoboinik (who had also been a political prisoner), was placed by them in charge of the city Bryansk. Kaminski became Voskoboinik's assistant, and the two of them immediately organized several thousand volunteers to combat the Soviet partisans who were counterattacking from the forests of Bryansk. This formation soon grew to 10,000 men and was called by them the Russian National Liberation Army (abbreviated in Russian as "RONA").

Kaminski brigade is on a par with Dirlewanger , unjustifiable even under the terms of the Waffen SS.
It has possible PR problems lets say bit like doing the Relief of Belsen ....
Ah, sorry, you had to spell it out for me. Don't use big names then, after all it's only a platoon of 30 Germans chasing a bunch of citizens-at-arms being supported and trained by a small contingent of Red Army specialists. Er, isn't it?

No, I totally agree . Bryansk is a good a place as any for the battle, as I said the q is do we ignore it in the storyline or not ?
My concerns would be some SS lunatic saying "ooh great lets all badge up as Kaminski Brigade" which would be a no no in my book .

Cant do Kreta because of the FJ torching villages. The list goes on.......
I simply wouldn't mention which German units were in the area, just use the catch all of Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS.

Make it a small story in a big picture - intelligence has led Germans to the location of a remote partisan training area deep in the Bryansk forests. The Red Army trainers have been coming and going from the area for weeks and increase in supply truck frequency has been noted...

Had a peach of an idea for the game play , won't involve Kaminski, gives open play, uses a lot of the roads and lots of nice possibilities.
