Bryansk (Russian: БрÑÌнÑк) is a city in Russia, 379 km South-West from Moscow. It is the administrative center of Bryansk Oblast. Geographical location 53°16′N 34°25′E. Population 454,700 (2001).
Bryansk - History
The city was founded in 985 as a military settlement on the right bank of Desna River. It was first mentioned in written records in 1146 as Dobryansk (Russian: ДебрÑÌнÑк).
It was a possession of elder line of Chernigov branch of the Rurikovich dynasty, but in the late 13th century Bryansk passed to princes of Smolensk. In the mid 14th century princes of Chernigov ruled again in Bryansk. In 1310 the city was conquered by Tatars. During the reign of prince Algirdas in 1356 it joined the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and was given to Demetrius I Starshiy. After his death it was ruled by Jahajla, Vitaut and Svidryhajła.
In the second half of the 15th century Muscovy began attempts to reconquer Bransk and accomplished this in 1503. In the early 17th century during the Time of Troubles Bryansk fortress saw many battles between Russians and Polish invaders. In 1708 Bryansk became part of Kiev gubernia, however in 1779 the city was transferred to Oryol gubernia. Since 1783 artillery guns and shells were made there for the Russian Imperial army and inscribed on the city's coat of arms. In the 19th century Bryansk became an important metallurgy and textile producing city and by 1917 the city had over 30 000 people. In 1918 the city became part of the Belarusian People's Republic until it was retaken by Russians in 1919. During the Great Patriotic War Bryansk was occupied by the Germans between October 6, 1941 and September 17, 1943.
During the war about 60 000 Soviet partisans were active in and around Bryansk inflicting heavy losses on the German army. In 1944 Bryansk became administrative center of Bryansk Oblast.
Bryansk - Modern city
Today Bryansk is an important steel and machinery industry center with many large factories. Wagons and locomotives for the Russian railway trains are made there. Bryansk also has two universities, three theatres and a technical academy. The city and the region was mildly affected by Chernobyl accident.
Russian cosmonaut Viktor M. Afanasyev, shot put athlete Svetlana Krivelyova and composer Matvei Blanter were born in Bryansk.
The Bryansk Front was a Front (i.e. a military formation of roughly Army Group size) of the Soviet Army during the Second World War. This sense of the term is not identical with the more general usage of military front which indicates a geographic area in wartime, although a Soviet Front may operate within designated boundaries.
Yeremenko was designated commander of the Front when it first formed in mid-late August 1941, comprising, in Erickson's words, 'on paper two armies, 50th and 13th, with eight rifle divisions each, three cavalry divisions, and one tank division but many of these formations were badly whittled down by battle losses'. Two other armies from Soviet Central Front, 21st and 3rd, that had avoided encirclement, were promised but also badly worn down.
In late August along with the Western and Reserve Fronts it launched a large but failed counteroffensive in the Smolensk, El'nia, and Roslavl regions to halt Army Group Centre's advance on Moscow. Despite some success by Reserve Front at El'nia, the efforts by Bryansk Front were a failure.
On its second formation in mid-late 1941 under Cherevichenko, it was only active for about six months, being redesignated Voronezh Front on 7 July 1942. By the time of Operation Blau, the German summer offensive of 1942, the Front comprised the 3rd, 13th, 40th, 48th Armies, the 5th Tank Army, and the 2nd Air Army. [1]Reformed; disbanded 11/12 March 1943 and HQ became HQ Kursk Front after a short time expecting to be HQ and basis of new Reserve Front. Reformed from Orel Front 28 March 1943.
It was later reformed, and by the time of the Battle of Kursk the Front consisted of the 11th, 3rd, 4th Tank, 61st, and 63rd Armies. Colonel General Markian Popov led it to liberate its namesake town in August and September 1943. On 10 October 1943 the STAVKA incorporated most of the Front's forces into the 1st Belorussian Front (former Central) and used Bryansk Front's HQ to form HQ Baltic Front, which then became 2nd Baltic Front.
In 1918 the Belarusian People's Republic claimed Bryansk, but the town was taken by Bolshevik forces in 1919. During the World War II, Bryansk was occupied by the Germans (from October 6, 1941 to September 17, 1943) and the city was heavily damaged by fighting. About 60,000 Soviet partisans were active in and around Bryansk, inflicting heavy losses on the German army. Soon after its liberation, Bryansk became the administrative center of Bryansk Oblast (1944).

Lieutenant General Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov (Russian: МихаиÌл ТимофеÌевич КалаÌшников, Mihail TimofeeviÄ KalaÅ¡nikov) (born November 10, 1919) is a famous Russian small arms designer, most famous for his AK-47, frequently called the Kalashnikov.
Kalashnikov began designing an assault rifle while in hospital after being wounded in the Battle of Bryansk. Soon afterwards, he entered a competition that had been launched for a new weapon that would take the new 7.62 x 39 mm cartridge and would not jam under the adverse conditions of the Soviet frontline. His winning entry, the "Mikhtim" became the prototype for the development of a family of guns.
This process culminated in 1947, when he designed the AK-47 (acronym for Avtomat Kalashnikova model 1947). In 1949, the AK-47 assault rifle became the Soviet Army's standard issue rifle; after that, the design became Kalashnikov's most famous invention.
