I'm after a set of 44 webbing but it's a b*gger to find a complete set so... how different is the cheap-as-chips 58 pattern?

Very.
'37patt is closer to '44patt than '58patt is.

the metal fittings on '58 pat are dark green anodised aluminium and the ammo pouches are left and right hand specific, one has the bayonet pouch on, the other has if i remember a pocket knife pouch on the side.
the yoke is a one piece although it's been about 18 years since I last wore a set!

If you're after 44 pattern for a wwii sas impression than as per my PM

dont bother.

use 37.

As mentioned 44 pattern didnt leave UK trials until early 45 and wasnt used in NWE.

Its pretty much a jungle set of webbing.

37 was used in europe well into the late 1950s

If the book your reading states SAS used 44 pattern in europe then chekc the sources. Veterans often get confused and authors make mistakes.

I've yet to see 44 pattern in NWE.

I have seen the parachute regiment wearing in Norway in *very* late war April 45 pics but thats because they were equipped to go to the PTO and got re-routed IIRC.
