Thanks David for your post - me thinks I'll go for the WPG's I've seen the lies on ebay about oh yeah these are really old ammo boots, but they turn out to be the 3 soled version etc.
I used the tape last weekend and it was bloody good, I came home with heels.
Oh and well done on fitting the cat in.
But you've still got the pebbling all over, which is wrong...
WPG repros are a better bet.
dammit... I meant the other way around.
pebbling all over is actually RIGHT... smooth all over is wrong! argh

But the ones pictured on the Silverman's website are smooth on the toe & heel and pebbled on the rest of the boot. They look like the WPG ones. I'm not buying them, but if I did why would they be wrong?
here is how it goes,,,,,, you are issued with boots with seperate heel cups and toe caps, they are all pebbled, you then iron out the pebbles on the heels and toes so you can bull them up to a high gloss. if the heel and toes are smoth but the rest of the boots are pebbled thats fine, (less work with the hot spoon).
Spot on Nige...
Well my ammo boots arrived - they were very stiff (they made a cracking sound when I flexed them) so I soaked them and went for a stroll so they are much better now. I also identified the blister inducing spots and will give them a good rub with vaseline tomorrow to soften those bits up.
They seemed to be covered in a strange strange shiny black ink which was water soluble, it's mostly all gone now, but the left boot is still very shiny like it's made out of a differently finished leather, like modern corcorans, it looks like polish wont be absorbed by the leather. The leather on the heel looks very thin too on that one. The other looks very well made, just like my DMS boots but with a different sole. Should look fine once I polish them both up.
Ranj - My pair arrived yesterday from WPG and first thing I noticed was the crappy black 'paint' finish, a miss hit hobnail - removed and hole left and a few other issues. They need some TLC and breaking in.
its ok lads, i will be giving a spit shine/bull master class over the weekend.
Good, you can demonstrate on my boots if you like?

Who's bringing the capote de brega?
I'm excused bulling boots - medical grounds!
RSI from all those tiny circles is it?
"I think we are in rats' alley - Where the dead men lost their bones."
erm... carpal tunnel sydrome and bulling won't mix, gadge
Ah of course....

he could use his feet and toes though

But then how would I hold my pint?

Gadge, I'll show you my scars - they're very appropriate for Easter.
Couple of questions for those with the WPG boots;
What's the sizing like? I hate buying footwear by mail order, and have bought the wrong size once or twice before.
Would a lye soap (saddle soap for example) remove the black coating, or are tougher measures required?
Cheers
Joe
Sizing just seems to be standard US sizing - US 10 = Uk 9 and so on.
Scrubbing them with a brush under hot water should get all the black inky dye stuff off, (cold doesn't seem to do it) then bull once they are dry.
Cheers
