Hi,
this is a really stupid question, but I've just acquired an original RE cap badge and It isn't obvious how to fit it to a GS cap. My other repro cap badges have got pin and clip arrangement so they just pin on, but this just has a big metal prong. I presume you have to make a hole in the cap and hook the prong through, but it doesn't look like a very strong attachment.
Do you sew it into place or does it just magically stay there?
I have tried searching for the answer to this but come up a blank.
TIA
Martin

Do you mean a slider? Like this: http://militarybadgecollection.com/wp-c ... 201950.JPG
If so... then yes make a hole, slide the slider in... and then put a matchstick on the inside right where the bend of the slider is. Unfortunately I can't find a photo of that online!
You might also find that a piece of brass (use plasticard for cheapness and ease) the shape of the badge, with a slot in it for the slider, placed inside the cap will help.
Oh and squeeze the slider close to the badge once fitted to help it stay where it is... Its brass, it will bend.
Thanks Yith,
Yes, it is a brass slider. That all sounds eminently sensible, good tip about using a stiff liner, I've got tons of plasticard lying around.
btw, I saw your South Staffs cap badge is backed with hessian, did you sew that to the beret or just let the badge hold it in place?
Cheers

It's not hessian, it's Holland Cloth... there's quite a difference!
It's wrapped and glued onto a piece of card and then slotted behind the cap badge.
This is exactly as seen on an original in the Staffordshire Regimental Museum in Lichfield.
Thanks. My next little project, finally adding 'Airborne' to my British impressions.

To save you searching we have some Holland Cloth about, though I think Ramsay has the main stock.
Right, thanks. Are you going to Bastogne? I could pick some up there??
If not I think Ramsay is going to Gothic LIne.

I'm not sure I have any left!
Comrade,
The correct period soldier fix is to use a brass backing slide they used on their Brass shoulder titles or as I do, a Brass Disc with two holes in it to trap the slide ( likely made for the task at a local level), you can then bull them up as well as they would have then back in the day, a small point but it shows you get the gag about WWII Dress regulations, the chic and fashion of the era and scale of Issue norms.
Anyone can use cardboard or plastic.
did you sew that to the beret or just let the badge hold it in place?
There are some little prongs where the scroll joins the knot whicch when bent forward do a wonderful job of holding the cloth/card insert. I have an insert I made ages ago here on my desk that you can have, I wil lbe at Bastogne.

Thanks Ranj, Chommers has already offered me some cloth too.

Martin if above options do not sort you out let me know and I will bring you some cloth at Gothic Line.
It is not essential to have the South Staffs cloth backing during WW2. There are plenty of photos that show them worn without. Many show it with Holland cloth too. You can please yourself.
