Hi all. Just a quick question about what to wear for a chindit impression.

I'm thinking of getting a jungle outfit to wear in the summer but not too sure on what the chindits actually wore. I've found sources saying they wore denim BD, others that they wore dyed KD. Was it a mixture of both?

Any help is appreciated.

Regards,

Ralph

It would initially be Khaki drill. I believe that like the Aussies, they may have started dying their kit green for better camouflage. This would be replaced by Jungle green battledress and eventually P44 Webbing.

Thanks for the links and advice guys.

I've seen people mention a guy called sanjay who sells jg kit. Will have to track him down.

Ralph

Sanjay runs an Indian company called Replicaters which I believe has re-invented itself as Paddelaters.

Only place an order if you're happy to never see money or product again.

Whatpriceglory.com also does JG and KD gear. They don't seem to have the JG battledress tunic or shirt at present though.

Spearhead is probably the cheapest place to get a slouch hat. They aren't 100% correct but are much cheaper than an Akubra hat.

The other option for Jungle gear is Australian. WPG does have Aussie JG's in stock in limited sizes, then you would just need brown or tan boots and M36 US leggings with a slouch hat and unblancoed webbing. If you have difficulty getting JG's in the correct size, Aussies were also known to be partial to US HBT trousers whenever they could obtain them.

Thanks for all the help guys.

After reading up on chindit kit from the Far Setting Sun I've decided to get the JG BD trousers from wpg and a khaki drill shirt that will be dyed jungle green. The FSS require the same kit for entry into their reenactment group so that seems the way to go.

Ralph

Not a Chindit impression but I did a 2nd Queens impression, I went for JG trousers and bush jacket, though invested in an aertex shirt as it got hot at the weekends game. Works really well in ferns and nettles. (Need to get a decent floppy felt slouch in the right colour)

Recently bought a book called Khaki Drill and Jungle Green, really useful resource, will look at the Chindit section. You could save money and not by shorts/trousers, pretend you have dysentery lol :giggle:-- attachment is not available --

The guy on the left is in British JG battledress trousers and aertex shirt. His hat is an original one and is almost identical to the spearhead militaria hat I am wearing (2nd from the right). You would just need to shape the bash to be more circular rather than the Aussie front to back bash.

I got my slouch hat from an army surplus place in Oz, hundreds of years ago. As my cousin remarked..'Its not a real slouch hat until you get a bit of shit on it'.

I got my jg's through the post but unfortunately the trousers are too small and postage back to the UAE costs almost as much as the trousers! Still, the shirt is really nice but I do need to get a good slouch hat.

Just to resurrect an old thread. I've finally got my Chindit impression sorted. It's in a useable state right now but still needs the odd thing to make it proper like.

Ralph

Looks grand fella, one thing I do notice is that you have the No.4 bayonet on and I believe the No4 didn't make it out to the far east?

How's the hat?

I won't lie, the pigsticker is a place holder untill I either get a machete or a SMLE bayonet. The hat is pretty nice to wear though a little big for my head but it'll do. I'll be trying this kit out at a skirmish day in a few weeks.

Ralph

Tuck the shirt in. I would ditch the E-tool. If you want to dig in, the jungle will make it impossible and you would have a shovel on a mule somewhere anyway.
