is there anywhere that sells the ammo boots that the commando's used with the rubber souls on them. or is it a case of getting a normal pair and maybe getting them re-soled.

cheers

Not that I know of. They were of course very, very rare. So few originals will be available. Its hard enough getting original Ammo boots!

There is a thread on the re-enacting forums where it mentions that it is possible to get the soles made up and then put on some ammo boots by a cobbler... I'm not sure anyone has done it yet.

However for our purposes 60's DMS boots are a pretty good alternative and there are quite a few of those about. Try Sabre Sales or The Bunker (in cornwall)

regarding the dms boots, as far as i know these were issued right up to 1983, so is there any difference in them from the 60's to the 80's.

The only difference in DMS boots I've seen is that some have black soles and some have green. Apparently the green ones are more resistant to chemicals and were issued to the RAF.

Whatever you do, don't buy a pair of commando "boots" from Replicaters. Sanjay does some wonderful stuff but boots are not his thing. Really. I just can't stress how awful they are.

DMS boots are advertised at only £15 on Sabre's website, Jay. :)

Never heard that, and can say with some authority RAF DMS boots had black soles during the late 70's and early 80's  (I know I waz there)

I had some 80s raf aircrew boots and they were lovely, like hi legs but much more supple and less of a tread.
