I found quite a strange gas mask pouch and only on opening found what it was. Was in a box of gas mask pouches and masks that one of our militaria dealers had, and he wanted only R350 for a set. I found this and it was the most complete and on pulling out the mask I recognised that as a WWII SA Union made mask and then the labelling showed the bag to be the same. Plus it contained the small tin.

Of interest may also be my walking compasses, which live in a tin in the far corner of my garage.

One is post war Rhodeisan made, one is SA made (I think post war) and the other is a Stanley without any broad arrows (also postwar, maybe???). Seen here with a compass pouch.

Nice find, but it's not a 'strange' one; the Mk7 pouch (and the similar looking Mk5, Mk6 and Mk8 pouches) is quite common really. Even Indiana Jones had a Mk7!
Great to find a matching SA made one with its mask and filter all complete as a set though :good:
R350 is about £26 here in England, which is about the price you'd expect to pay for such a British version on eBay, if you really wanted one. They can be found at carboot sales here in England (because there were so many issued to both military and civilian services) from people clearing out their dead elderly relatives houses for as low as £3 - £5 (R40.5 - R70).

Lovely collection of compasses too :)

Thanks McVickers.

The problem here is the shipping to SA is sometimes exhoberent and then you sometimes pay duties and stand a chance of it getting stolen in the post. Also recently Militaria prices have shot up here with WWII webbing becoming scarce. I see even SADF stuff from the 60's and 70's are getting collectable.

Indeed i got a mint condition service respirator in bag dated 1938 with the fabric covering on the face plate for about £15... but the first one i bought in worse nick was £25 so prices fluctuate.

I find it harder to find the 'lightweight respirator' in good nick and war dated as these only went out to the army and most were sold on post war to other nations when we adopted the S6.

I've got a lightweight ressie but its 53 dated and the filter is too big as i think its been used post war by a scandinavian country.

Here we don't see the lightweights much and most are post war ones (which I found good one of)

The Brit made masks we see here only have cloth on the pipe and not the mask and the SA made ones have cloth on mask but a rubber pipe. The bag close up loos different in terms of the clips and straps as well to the Brit ones I've seen but they may have been the earlier marks as McVickers said.

The bags for lightweight ressies are probably the cheapest original kit you can find int the uk (usually about £3 for 43 or 44 dated one) but the actual masks... hard to find dated one.
