I saw something in a charity shop and wodered what it was, I took a pic but can't get it off my phone at the moment so I'll describe it:
Olive drab, steel box, about 7 inches square, 5 inches deep, the lid was covered in tan webbing which was about half an inch wider all round than the lid. The lid was opened by pressing a brass button on the front which released a spring catch. Inside the left and right sides of the box where lined with 1/4 inch thick wood and the lid was lined with a asquare of something which looked like red brown formica or the kind of stuff they used to make PCBs from. There was a short carrying strap attached at either end to the sides of the box (i think by a rivet) with brass ends like British wartime webbing.
My guess is that it is some sort of battery box. Any suggestions?

Either a british 'radio-set accessory' carry case, or a 'spare parts' box. Sounds very much like a spare battery carry case by your description. I've a few radio-set 'spare parts' boxes if you wish me to take a pic of thier general styling for comparison. They're not really worth much/anything (my latest purchaced one bought this weekend just gone, is a "Set No.4 spare valves" box in perfect/mint condition minus it's contents - £2 it cost me), but look great and are good for set dressing

Thanks. I was guessing it was for batteries or something electrical, Oxfam in keswick want 20 quid for it, and no-one there could tell me what it was or why that was the price. Used to be a time you could get bargains in Oxfam.
I will be able to post a pic over the weekend.

Yeah, Oxfams are complete rip-offs. Frequently see things there priced far higher than they cost new! They just prey on the affluent and gullibly kind-hearted My cousin is the regional manager for Oxfam Anglia and Midlands, she even agrees that they suck. I've not seen an empty radio-set accessory box sell for more than £5 ever, and that's when it was one a friend really rather wanted to complete his radio set collection. If it is a plain battery box, offer them £1.50 for it - it's it's going price; £2 if your feeling generous for charity
