As per the title, I'm after a few ammo pouch brass press studs; these are the Newey-type fasteners but that have the dimpled cap, as opposed to the smock fasteners that have the smooth back.

I'm sure that I've seen them somewhere but my google-fu must be weak tonight - leads/links much appreciated please, cheers :good:

Certainly back in the day when I did more maintenance on British webbing these were completely unavailable and I had to usually glue old ones back together or just give up.

Someone must be making them - viz. SoF's repro pouches, where to find spares is another matter. How about asking SoF if they could include spares in their catalogue as the do for the smock studs? (last resort - maybe it is possible to be creative with the smocks studs?)

As you say Chommers ... someone must make them ......... :-?

I've fired off a couple of emails to repro hardware suppliers, so will see what they can come up with. Plan B was to be 'creative' and try using the plain type and gently centre-punch a few dimples in, but would have to be careful not to deform the cover out of true.

Reply from repro webbing supplier -

" ... I’m very sorry but I can’t help you out on the Newey Equipment press studs, as in the late 80’s or early 90’s Newey Brothers went bust and was broken up / asset stripped , and the fastener designs were bought out by three different companies Prym being one and T.H. Tompkins being another, I’ve never found out who company number three was. Anyway the tooling and press equipment for the Newey Equipment Pattern press studs went in the skip for the scrap man (late 70’s early 80’s) as I have asked first hand one of the surviving staff who now works at Prym’s UK head office, so there long gone. The only option would be to try and recycle some old ones, but I have had a go at this myself and I can’t say that it was successful. ... "

Will update as and when .........

The ^above^ reply was from a chap called Nigel, who owns and runs 'HT&C Reproductions', manufactures quality repro webbing, on original machines and knows his business - highly recommended :good:

From Soldiers of Fortune I got an unsigned, one line reply which basically said 'no, tough' ..................

I'm now looking at either some cheap, unbranded snap fasteners or Prym variations, that could be fettled to suit.

I made pretty good looking ones for a home-made Thompson drum mag pouch (a dreamed-up item of kit) which copies the general build arrangement of a standard 37patt universal pouch. The centre of a 15mm Prym brass popper head was drilled out (actually, I turned it out on my dad's lathe) and inserted into this hole was a small hammered/dimpled 'jeans rivet' head bought from the same haberdashery shop as the Prym poppers.

I had posted up pictures in a topic, but it looks as if the posts have been removed over time - there's still a reference to my pouch build (alas, no photos) in the "Today I..." thread, so I can reasure myself I didn't dream it.... :P

P.S: I know I've got photos on my computer of the popper construction somewhere, but my computer is currently out of action due to a software conflict, so I'm currently using my partners computer!

I've been using lewis pouches for Thompson mags as at one stage they were easily got here.

I've also been struggling to find the poppers and have been stripping them of "rear" bren pouches which there seem to be a lot floating around here. I had to import off E-bay 2 front ones to make myself some sets.

Yes, it's funny how there can be bales and bales of one type of ebbing item, and the matching other is in very short supply. I've noticed that here in England, there are loads of unissued right-hand L-straps about, but hardly any left-hand L-straps! :slap:

No posts or pics removed historically - keep searching!

As a matter of interest, how is it possible to cannibalise old poppers - surely they are punched and reamed securely on first fix?

Wow! You're a star!
I've done completely open searches with author:'McVickers' and keyword:'popper' and that never turned up.... :slap:

Ah, unfortunately RipWay got taken down - I'll see if I can digout my remote hard-drive backup from back then and rescue the pictures.

Watching with interest McV :good:

Having checked the 37 webbing that I have, this pouch seems to be an early-type as it has the bullet loops in the lid, but is dated 1943 .............. and has an apparently original smooth cap to the popper ??-- attachment is not available --

(some) Canadian and (most) Australian webbing used smooth popper caps. MkII (with unusually 'late' dates) and usual dated MkIII pouches from Canada production can be found with the rifle grenade bullet loops in the top of the flap.

I have a few in my collection too :)
