I've spoken with the chap who sold us this who is very happy to replace it with a 20 cue system that he currently has in stock. This doesn't have the serial ability that the 18 cue system has.
Are we happy to do this? He's now unable to supply the 18 cue system in the short term because he's recalling them.

I don't see that we would ever need to join boxes together so I don't think it's a problem (we would lose the ability to add an alternative trigger too, again, no biggy)
