Just had a phone call from Tony.

He gave me a run down of what they can do - it's very flexible and he will cover whatever we want to do. It will be a full day course, weekdays only. Certificate at the end that shows you have been on the course and have been taught correct methods of handling and use. Useful for H&S, Risk Assessment and insurance requirements.

He covers their product range of most types, working and safe distances, additions (debris/flammable), storage, transport, handling, laying, wiring, firing.

At the end of the day covers high explosives too!

So, part of the value is getting to know their product range (not available on web site), knowing what product to use for which effect as well as safe use etc.

Cost - nominal £45 per person. It won't be part of a big group, just us (unless he can co-ordinate other bods to make better use of his time) although I wondered if Che or Carl might be up for it as they seem to have taken the pioneer role to heart!

Wow, sounds great. Where do they hold it? Will we have any surplus from TEHL to cover this?

It's at his factory in Lincolnshire and yes, we will have funds ongoing...

They are working flat out for events and film work at the moment but Tony said he doesn't mind stepping out of the fray for a day to sort us out as his teams 'know what they are doing..' Should bloody hope so!

Not a problem, as long as I get a few weeks notice to book the time off work

Not too sure about this. Players messing around with setting pyro in game is asking for trouble.

There's another bonus to doing this. It makes CiA look more "serious", in that we are then properly trained and certificated to handle display pyrotechnics. To Site owners (well, ones with half a brain cell) this implies a high level of responsibility within CiA.

Opps! Misread it!

I can book a day off whenever but have a few events that I can't get out of coming up over the next couple months.

I don't see it as a problem if it's too much of a trip Jay, although it will be cool if you can make it and probably a giggle as well...

Bleurgh, 230 miles for me!

Dave, as I have to come past Derby, would it be worth us car sharing from yours and splitting on petrol?

I'm absolutely effing brassic at the moment. The training day's making things very tight as it is.

The annoying thing is, I'm not actually buying anything! Just trying to pay me bills.

Actually, I've had a bit of an idea. If I write it up as a "Is your site operator qualified to use Pyro?" type article, i can make the travel tax deductable - that is, if you guys dont mind me doing so, and I get Tony's OK for it.

That's OK with me Jay - you might want a word with Tony about the use of the word 'qualified' though. There is a recognised course/qualification used by the film/tv world but it's nowt to do with what we are doing. However, he did mention a certificate than can be used for insurer's questions about competance/risk assessment/due dilligance....

Stephen - no problem, just looked at the map and that makes sense! Satnav say it will take 1' 35" from my house.

Means a fook sight less than "qualified", thats for sure ;)
