So what does one do about the lack of groundsheet?

You use a groundsheet... :)

Also known as a poncho.

Or sleep on a blanket etc...

First, stop being a poove. Second, sleep on a poovey roll mat....

I'm sure my Dutch army tent is ok anyway.

You should pitch your tent in a place that's not going to flood. I did mention this at CR when Guy showed me the German camp......

The non-groundsheet period tents were the only ones that stayed dry at CR!

A guy is selling some WWII British pup tents here:

http://www.wwiireenacting.co.uk/forum/v ... 49&t=50273

The price is about right.

I already have 2. I can't sleep in both at the same time. A third won't help!

Note these are brit... useful if you are doing brit, but if you're doing yank, then you're a lot better off with a pair of shelter halves.

I was about to ask about that side of things. For the price I may well get one for the Brits. As I dont have a magic book of Brits (btw the bit on late/post war tentage was in the magic book of Yanks) how would this pup tent work in regards a loadout? Does it fit in anything - like the Yank pegs and stuff go on the bottom of the DB pack? Or is it just something you carry in a binbag.

It was generally carried in a vehicle. They are man portable, but not part of any sort of webbing kit and the poles are one piece.

You generally roll it up around the poles with the pegs inside, use the guy ropes to hold it together and carry it on your shoulder. At least that's what I've done and I've even managed to walk a fair way with two balanced on my shoulders and something else in my hands... ;)

We're just discussing the possibility of asking every to turn up in period or repro tents instead of orange monstrosities. WW2 style pup tents are dirt cheap and are very strong, warm and waterproof.

That would be a step too far for us I'm afraid, no groundsheet and easy access for creepy crawlies is the issue.

 I believe Chommer's period-looking tent has a sewn-in groundsheet and fly netting.
