Anyone know where to get repro or vintage '40s civvy clothing for the missus? She has many talents but making clothes ain't one of them.

I got Rachel's from a dealer at Crich. You'll find many 40s events have traders who specialise in 40s civilian stuff.

Helga can probably help a lot more.

Do these dealers only do shows or do they have retail / e-commerce outlets as well?

If they do then they're keeping it under wraps 'cos I can't find them.

Specialist auctions are better for original civi kit than ebay, mainly as most sold on their have been approved by the vintage fashion guild (american run community), you'll not true period items frequently sell for more than ebay.

Ebay things to watch out for Polyester (wasn't made til post WWII) Fur worn with a summer frock (never happened was kept for cold and warmth, not suitable or appropriate then on a hot day ;) besides which she'd pass out with heat exhaustion. USA ebay is good for slightly cheaper but authentic items, I've had a few period 30s items shipped over at minimum cost, most of the hassle with ebay is waiting and watching.

There are certain styles you can get away with as modern repro's, a good website for reproduction dresses is http://www.bigbeautifulbarbarabrown.com/id1.html most inspired, but the 30s tea dress and 40s dance dress are both true period shapes (as worded by Miss spitfire) and lots of people recommend them on the pozzi forum. Stuff can be found on ebay, but you'll have to pick amongst the good and the crud. People see money before they see what is actually is, thus lots LOTS on there is listed as 40s but actually isn't and is 70s/80s.

Events (all of them) have civilian items on stalls (GPM was lacking this year though), Michelle does custom made dresses, but her time atm is limited with her M-F job and wedding dresses. A lot of it again is knowing what to look for as some of the dealers sell late forties/fifties stuff as wartime  but sell it knowing the unsuspected will line their pockets.

More than happy to comfirm a link on ebay if you find something and state whether its original or at least WWII 40s style rather than late.

Have got books on this but ya darn sarf and I could have lent them to you for collection at Waltham  :slap:

Not sure on my fabric status or time, I do have some original patterns, but sadly atm haven't the time to knock a dress together.

PS Kids are a doddle :good: especially girls

Oh and to add, there is still some 40s styled/inspired items in the highstreet stores to be found amongst the 80s shapeless mode of late.

For a first event I'd be better advising you to go for something in keeping with the style and see how she takes to it, shoe styles in particulary are available in high street shops atm. Also makes it a cheaper option before she decides to collect original clothes and leave you no pennies to spend on kit

Hmmm have to work out who I know in that neck of the woods. My local place is Priestleys and like a good number of traders their 40s stock either is late or they claim it is 40s or earlier when its blatently not, have been collecting now for some time so finding a trustworthy trader is always a plus. Ebays bad as well, theres dealers selling PW uniforms of polyester as period items with stonking prices. I guess the real thing is if you're going to buy original do the research before you pay, once you've spent £xx on it, its too late to find out you've been scuppered.

Che need not reply to this thread and state what I actually have in the way of vintage clothing  hoepfully he won't even notice this post and my inquiring/discussing getting more  shhhhhhhhhhh

Warhorse are the only place I know that make ATS BD.

(Well you could risk Sanjay ;) )

Anyway, if you can find some Men's stuff that fits, you wouldn't be far off anyway! Many ATS actually had men's BD as the ladies stuff wasn't always available. The main difference is that the ladies would always have open collars with a blouse and a tie.

I'm sure others can elaborate or correct me.
