I just found this interesting guide online. It's created by a Canadian re-enactment group and deals with Canadian impressions, but a lot of it applies to all British impressions.

So anyway I thought it worth posting up as it has some good photos:

Scull Cap:
A shortened version of the balaclava known as a scullcap was also worn in cold weather, quite often under the helmet.
