Officers did use EM tunics during the war. If you look at the M36 uniform , the officers have several noticable differences :-

1 Generally 6 buttons instead of 5
2 No belt hook holes around the waist
3 Turn back cuffs
4 Higher collar held together with 2 clips instead of 1
5 Generally better quality wool , or often garberdine
6 Proper silk lining
7 Patch pockets have more pronounced points to the flaps .

How do I know all this ?, I''ve just paid ot have one tailored to replace my EM one

Not at all bad for the price. The wool is much finer and the jacket lighter than the Sturm EM one I've got , and it fit's a lot better apart from the neck which he's made too small .I'm hoping a bit of wearing /slimming will resolve this issue.
