does anyone have any info/pictures for the correct method of attaching an MP40 Paratrooper gun bag to the Leather "y" braces?

I've spent quite some time looking at uniform reference pages but to no avail.

cheers

I've never seen one in the field (in fact i've never heard of em before the one put up for sale) let alone on y-straps.

German paras dropped with a pistol the mP40s were putin rigid containers that were recovered on landing.

Its why they took horrific casualties compared to allied paras as they made 'combat drops' on top of the objective and fought their way to the canisters whereas allied paras form up several k away , get inot fighting order then leg it to the objective.

THe bag you got looks nice but I think it somthing made to look German WW2 style rather than a copy of real kit, have seen a few for sale in the US but doubt they where ever used in WW2,

Some FJ did go against orders and jump with MP40's but they generally just hooked them into there gear or slung them and jumped.

Don't blame them! Didnt the FJ also have their stick grenades on them when they dropped, slightly better than only having a Luger!

Unlike uk paras the German 'chute dropped the soldier face down!

It's why they wore kneepads

Also am I right in believing that they had no direct control of their decent either, the pics I have seen it just looks like theyre attached to the canopy by 1 line.

Yep, no steering lines (cant remember the exact terms)

We learnt a hell of lot for their mistakes and combat experience disaster (crete etc)

The RZ chute used by the germans was a piece of shit. For several reasons:

A: As already stated, it left the Paratrooper to land on his knees and elbows, hence the HUGE amount of knee and elbow padding that the FJ used. Due to the "forward roll" type landing, FJ couldn't carry anything more than a pistol without risking breaking their ribs on the SMG/rifle when landing.

2: No risers, hence, no ability to spill air from the 'chute for rudimentary control

3: It used buckles to hold the FJ in, unlike the central QD buckle used on Brit and Yank para gear, and hence took ages to get out of.

4: The FJ chute opened VERY fast. Great for low level (circa 250 foot) drops, but bad because it could cause spinal damage as it opened with such shock to the body.

As a side note, the famous FJ "dive from the door" wasn't cos it looked cool - it was necessity. If he wasn't parallel to the ground when the chute opened, he was likely to find himself upside down, with his feet entangled in the parachute lines :?

The WEIRDEST thing is that the Germans had an excellent parachute in use at the same time - as used by pilots, yet they chose to stick with a crap design for FJ.

here endeth the lesson!
