I wonder if anyone can tell me if they recognise this type of water bottle...

Its very similar to a large capacity german medic/gebirgsjager one but I don't recognise the type of leather carrier, and it has no markings, but its condition is inline with WW2.
Any ideas ?

Eastern Bloc I reckon; maybe early DDR or Czech.

Yeah, that's what I wondered, or Bulgarian, but I've not managed to find a picture of another like it, its supposed to have been found in Bavaria.

I tried to google various options, but couldn't find it - in fact, the only picture I found was that one from ebay - it definitely is not WW2 German!

I didn't think it was German mainly from the lack of markings, but thought it might be WW2, the only other one similar I could find was from a shipwreck site...

but I am intrigued as to what it actually is :?

Certainly the leather carrier is similar, but the bottle is more oval and the cover is almost identical (except for the strap fixings) to a standard M39 field bottle I have even down to the poppers, I'm pretty sure the leather carrier and the bottle are a matched set, and the belt hook is more like the medic bottle type. They did mention in that link that the Japanese one was like a WW1 field bottle, but I think I'm probably leaning towards it being very early post war east German medic bottle maybe ?

My only other idea was WW1 German, which is fairly realistic considering that the one on WA could have ended up being sold to a Chinese Warlord or even the Nationalist Army during the 1920's or 1930's, then may well have found its way into Japanese service during their war against that country.

Seems to be a rather unusual model, but I kept searching until I found this;

Its similar, but cannot really make out whether its identical.

It is similar, but not the same, its more round than the one I have, but other than that looks very similar, do you know if they marked the water bottles in WW1 ?

I believe they were marked on the side, left on your photo where the little ring is. The bottle cap often(but not always, depended on manufacturer) had markings aswell.

Like this one:

And another example:

My knowledge of ww1 canteens isnt all that great, but I believe Austro Hungarian medic bottles were unmarked and similar to German ones.

Seemingly this type of bottle was used by DRK auxiliaries before 1937 :)
