Any idea of which unit and which era you want to portay? early war stuff can be a fair bit different to late war.

When we were a Kingdom it was run by a King
When we were an Empire it was run by an Empress
Now we're a country we're run by a..........

Congratualtions, just in time for a reasonable priced working MP40 with luck !

Advice only - go for M36/40s greys Steiner , you can wear them for virtually any period , they always look smart and it's instantly recognisable.

Oh. I was wondering about the practicality of wool. Also, I can't afford jackboots - I didn't know if it was realistic to have gaiters with Feldgrau trousers?

Fecking warm in winter, ran round all day on Sunday wearing T shirt and M36s - totally warm . Comfy too , and not had problems with the itch
Reckon jackboots are very practical too ( I've got rubber soled ones) They are like leather wellies, see a pond? straight through.

I'm having to go bargain basement, so it's a field cap instead of helmet & cover, and no jackboots, I'm afraid.

I'm pretty much decided on tan & water camo - unless I'll be rejected as a heretic!

Start with what you can afford , and then buy bits and bats as you can get them cheap ! All in my current german uniform and kit owes me about 400 quid ( most of it is reenacting quality) but it can be done for much cheaper .

What I find sort of amusing is that Willi Heinrich writes a novel, which everyone tries to prove as real life; whereas Guy Sajer's autobiography The Unknown Soldier, is dismissed as fiction. To me, it's the most authentic book I've read.

Who dismisses Sayer's book as fiction? - It's the best very clearly first hand account of the Ostfront I have read.

The debate still goes on in some corners mate - some nitpickers decided that because he got some details incorrect (like the elite cuffband on the wrong arm, etc), it cast the whole thing into doubt. Ridiculous, eh?

I also found an article where somebody actually tracked him down, a few years ago.

But yes, it is without doubt one of the most amazing books I have read.

Long time since I read Guy Sajer's book. Damn good read - but there has certainly been a lot of conjecture about it!

Crikey, I've just worked out how much my insignia are going to cost!! Assuming my uniform has a breast eagle and infantry shoulder pads (as per the description), I was going to order:

Collar patches
Silver combat award
Silver wound badge
Silver close combat award
Gefreiter rank patch
Iron Cross 1st class
Krim battle shield

That's over

Some of it you might get on ebay , but generally they won't allow stuff with swastikas on .
There is a seller called ironcrossbunker - try contact him direct for a cheap WWII iron cross.

I could only find ironcrosshunter on ebay, who just seems to do 1/6 scale items. I'm probably getting the stuff from regaliaspecialist.com, since he does the whole lot. His prices are not that expensive, but I think it's just down to the fact that the Germans were obsessed with badges! Have you fought in 3 combats? Here's a badge! Have you fought against partisans? Here's another badge! etc etc etc. When you look at this guy's catalogue, you realise just how many badges they had, compared with the Brits or Yanks.
