what does RAL mean?

RAL comes from "Reichsausschuß für Lieferbedingungen und Gütesicherung" - look it up on a search engine.

these might be slightly noobish questions but,
i think i read somewhere along this thread that black helmets were only for parade? and grey is for field use? did each soldier have two then? what does RAL mean? is the RAL 6006 or whatever it was the standard colour?

Black helmets ? I can only recall pre-war Liebstandarte SS wearing them. From 1940 onwards, RAL6006 ("olive grey" I think it's sometimes called) was the standard colour for helmets.

(FYI, you can still order paints using the RAL numbers.)

Looks pretty damn good to me. Those half mesh covers are a bugger to do and yours looks great.
