Ok, I am being a bit of a thick here, but how do the Y steps attack to the belt rig on Kar98 webbing?

Leather straps on the back of the pouches around the belt, y strap hooks into the d rings on top of the pouches.

So it literally is held on with the weight of the belt?

Early war uniforms had belt hooks to take the weight, later on they became external Y straps.

Either way you need to do your belt up really tight and well above your belly button.

Thanks you guys.

Martin, I worked out it needs to be high, it would not extend far enough to sit on the hips.

Here is a decent photo showing how high it needs to go. Basically so you can still open your pockets. You can also see the Y straps hooked into the K98 pouches
