Looking for some trousers suitable for primarily an SS impression, but that would also be suitable for Heer, if ever I decide to go down that route. However .....
*Don't want wool if possible
*Camo is out due to differing SS/Heer styles (and prefer the impression that plain trews give anyway)
*Need to be 38/40 waist (bigger if a 'high cut'), with a long leg suitable to wear with gaiters and low boots
*If there's a difference, Senior NCO/Officer cut
*Need to be as cheap as possible ! (£20-25ish)
I've seen illustrations/pictures of German troops wearing dark trousers with a left thigh pocket, but can't find a reference for them anywhere, only Luftwaffe tropical trousers, which are obviously a different colour. The reason that these are of interest is that I have a spare pair of Brit denims .... could they be dyed a grey/green and be a passable 'German' trouser ?
Are there period repro HBT/Drill trousers available (ie not modern moleskins) that would look the part (mid-late war impression of a veteran) ?
I've read the guides and am aware of the normal avenues to purchase trousers but these seem to be iro £35-£40 + p&p and don't fit the above criteria; I'm trying to work to a budget for a change.
Any ideas/comments/suggestions gratefully received ......

I found this pic in one of my books, the trousers have the pocket on the thigh and it states that they were made from reed green cotton drill, so I should think your BD denims would be ok if dyed ![]()

Cheers Slick
That illustration is one of the few that I've seen. I've yet to find any mention of this style in the normal clothing lists and no suppliers seem to have them shown/listed.
From the collar tabs he's a Heer officer, which is not a problem, as initially the SS were issued Army stock, and by the end of the war the troops would be using whatever was available, including enemy kit if neccessary. I don't mind the impression being different to the run-of-the-mill, but I also don't want to base it on just one or two odd pics tho.
+1 for dyeing the denims then so far ....

Have also found this shot on another forum, under a thread discussing 'reed greens' .....
No description, and uniform doesn't look particulary green, reed or otherwise ?

I'm sorry to tell you that Brit' lightweights don't take dye at all. I once tried to dye a set black and they just came out a mankier shade of green and assorted blotches around the seams.

When I want your opinion - I'll tell you what it is!
These are 1950's 'denims' (same as late-war style) which are 100% cotton, as opposed to modern 'lightweights', which are poly-cotton; normal dye will only affect/colour the natural cotton fibres, not the man-made poly(ester) fibres, hence the strange results.
It is possible to dye poly-cotton but ordinary dylon isn't man enough for the job !

If you are thinking of dyeing original 50s Brit denims put them on Ebay as they are very sought after and buy a pair of repros to dye
Looks like they were the panzer variant of the reed greens, the other pics I`ve come across were of panzer grenadiers wearing them, and a pair in Italian camo as well.
Italian camo trousers pop up on ebay for about a tenner, but they have the pockets on the side m65 style, remove the pockets and pop one back on the front of the left thigh, its cheap and you wouldn`t have to fiddle with your Brit denims ![]()

Plate 3.41. Awards formation. This photograph is interesting for a number of reasons. Although the officer on the viewer’s left wears what appears to be a four-pocket reed-green field tunic, he also wears variant pattern reed-green Panzer trousers (thigh pocket on the right leg).
Excellent references again, Slick, much appreciated !
Have been looking for cheap Italian camo but no joy so far. Might have to go with the repro Oak, as per the guide, and worry about the Heer if/when I get around to it.
Cheers for the info ![]()
