Are postwar DDR gaiters a close enough item?

They are a little bit "taller" as it were. You can get excellent repro ones from Richard Underwood, only about £15.

Also the leather straps should also only have 3 holes, not the post-war/dodgy repro ones with 5 or maybe 6 holes

The material also tends to be different. Post war (and many repros) are much stiffer so are more ridgid when worn and sit differently. Getting correct ones from RAU is well worth the £15 IMO.
