Hi Rizzo, troops would wear whatever they were issued with, so an M40 tunic with M37 trousers would be a common combination, yes. Contrary to what a few people think, uniforms were not handed in and upgraded for the latest version - they were worn until they pretty much fell apart. Resources were scarce!

Genossen,
Trousers wear out quicker than jackets, to mix and match is good in this case.
:D

Actually, the only uniform that would not mix would be the M44, which had a shorter tunic, akin to British battledress. But if you bought an M36 or M40 tunic and M37 trousers, they would do you right for all periods of the war.

Although Guy Sajer said his company was issued with new uniforms when theirs were completely worn out in Russia - apart from the one poor SOB who missed the parade and was left in rags.

Some of the translation is extremely suspect as well, or it is in the edition I've got. How they managed to get infanteriegeschutz to come out as 'geschmooz' is beyond me.

I thought a common view was that he was actually in SS Wiking and not GD at all, so he shifted some stuff around a bit, although that doesn't explain some of his accounts of the period post-Kursk which could pretty much have only been GD. Veterans memoirs often have inconsistencies though. Peter Beales history of 9th RTR 'Tank Tracks' is fascinating as it compares the regimental war diary with individual accounts of the same actions, and they might as well have been recounting different battles.

As the Duke of Wellington observed, you may as well try to describe a ball as a battle.
