Does anyone know what the correct weight of a stahlhelm with liner should be?

I have a genuine M42 which with liner weighs approx 1.2Kg, My brother has just got a repro M35 which weights approx 1.6Kg, quite a big difference really. So im wondering if there was a difference in weight between M35, M40, and M42 stahlhelms? maybe due to the latter being of lower grade steel or something?

Also curious to know how much everybodies repro's weigh?

So don’t think I marched there for this reason – it could carry another name – but because there is a very important goal... this goal I wanted to take – and you know – we are very modest, we have it already."

Afraid I havent got a repro to weigh, but there was a fundamental difference in the manufacture of the M35 and M42, have a look at this link
http://www.axishistory.com/index.php?id=5173

Might explain the weight loss.

Paul.

Sorry, didnt mean to sound like I was suggesting you didnt know the difference between the styles, my suggestion was more that the manufacturing process was changed.

There are different size stahlhelms - the bigger they are the more they weigh I guess !!!

Correct obviously, but 400g is a big difference! hence my interest. :)

My M40 is one of the lightest lids I own, but I used to have a Feuerwehr one (of M40-ish design) that was so heavy it was almost impractical to wear.

Not 100% sure with repros but have had various different repro M35s of varying quality from shi** to excellent same sizes-different weights(sorry dont know exact weights).

Original wise i believe M40 and M35s were heavier than M42s and Quist made helmets again apparently regardless of type were always heavier than other makers due to Quist ones being made of better quality steel.

I asked this question because new repro m35 did feel heavy. so have put all my other helmets on the scales.

repro m35 from zeltplane 1621g

uk mk6 kevlar with NVG mount 1567g

danish kevlar UN 1491g

bundswher kevlar large shell 1701g

east german para (steel) 1477g

east german infantry 70s/80s(steel)1647g

so as i have worn the bw kevlar for many years airsofting the m35 should not be a problem :good:

cheers chaps. :good:

I just read in my copy of Deutsche Soldaten that the largest size of the Quist made M40 were a weight of 1.3Kg.

Looks like most of the modern repro's are a little bit overweight then.

Good to know 1.6kg is less than the BW helmets Ian, no worries about needing a neck brace after a days wear then

Interesting Rich, I didn't know anyone actually did M42 repro's all the ones I've ever seen have been M35's. what size is your M42?

It funny, you would have thought that repro helmets in general would have been lighter than originals not heavier. So far it seems they are around 300g heavier!

Its a size 58liner, no idea on the shell. Bought it off the ww2 reenacting forums- hence why I don't know where it came from. Medieval arms and now also Spearhead do M42 repros though.

M35 helmet.com also has some useful info and can be good to get inspiration for custom paint jobs.

Good links chaps :good:

the veteran interviews on German-helmets ( http://german-helmets.com/Veterans-Para ... ctions.htm ) make interesting reading. particularly the FJ interview. seems they didn't like the M38's that much and would have preferred standard infantry helmets.

So maybe all those photos of FJ's in standard infantry helmets which we tend to assume being down to shortages and luftwaffe integration into the heer, might actually be down to the FJ's prizing the infantry helmets and getting them whenever they could!?

here's the Fj interview:

Interviewed January 2001:

The perspective of a Fallshirmjäger (paratrooper) was captured during a conversation with a veteran of most of the major Luftwaffe paratrooper missions. This veteran saw extensive action in the Mediterranean and Western Front battles. His comments on helmets are noted below:

"Our helmets had a very short brim and very little protection on the sides. We felt like our faces and the sides of our heads were very exposed. The helmet was not as favored as the Infantry helmets that had a very long brim in the front and sloping sides. We wished that our helmets had been like those. The strap was very good and the helmet fit on our heads tightly. Sometimes our helmets had decals and sometimes they did not. As I recall, the blue-gray helmets had two decals and the green ones had only one decal. Sometimes they did not have them at all. The blue-gray painted ones had a shiny surface and the green ones had a very dull green paint. We liked the dull helmets because they did not shine very much and that protected us from the enemy. If I could redesign the helmet I would make it have a brim and more protection on the sides."

“I wanted to come to the Volga at a specific location at a specific city. By chance it carries the name of Stalin himself. So don’t think I marched there for this reason – it could carry another name – but because there is a very important goal... this goal I wanted to take – and you know – we are very modest, we have it already."
