Here is a very interesting post from another forum about getting your VS impression right:

The red, black and white armband became the standard issue one very early on. It was produced in huge quantities and replaced all of the locally produced ones that appeared at the start. In photos from the period it is by far and away the most prevalent item. Also in the majority of photos the men, usually veterans of some form of military service, are wearing it as a cuff title.

I have to say it again, all these photos of civilian clad VS men standing around wearing suits and fedora's, holding weird Austrian breech loading rifles, are propaganda shots from the very beginning. Almost all of the VS were uniformed in standardised military clothing by December 1944. There were different categories of units: Those nearest the frontlines, and therefore the most likely to be called into action, were given priority and were usually attached to Army units. Their weird assortment of weapons were ditched and standard WH weapons issued as replacements. It is only the units far away from the fighting that were issued assorted party uniforms and obsolete weapons - they would guard train stations and POW camps. A casual read of either Kissel's or Weaver's books will show you everything you need to know about the VS, and will quickly dispel these fantasy notions about civilian clothing etc.

Some VS units in the east were issued VolkssturmGewehr rifles, StG44's, G43's and MG42's. Some had the now much mailigned and re-enactor friendly MP3008 SMG (Sten copy). VS units in Koenigsberg fought in the city's trenches with the same skill and determination as they had done in WWI. Do not pidgeon hole this before you have studied it thoroughly.
