I've always suggested that people consider their age when choosing their rank .
If you are in your 30's or even worse older 
, then badging up as a humble Landser or SS Mann is somewhat anachronistic unless you are claiming to be a conscript . Elite units and to a degree the SS were kept going by foreign volunteers as the supply of young souls in Germany dried up past 1943, led by older soldiers promoted before their time .
If you consider some notable figures of the SS , then the majority of officers in their late 20s or thirties were quite senior :-
Stdf Wilhelm Monke 33 in 1944 .
Ostbf Joachim Peiper 28 in 1944
OstGrpf Sepp Dietrich 52 in 1944
Stdf Kurt Panzer Meyer 34 in 1944
ObStbf Max Wunsch 28 in 1944
BgdF Fritz Witt 36 in 1944
Equally if you had joined the Whermatch or SS in your early 20's , and had survived 4 years of war into your thirties , the chances of you not having been promoted to senior NCO or officer I would suggest are very slight . In four years of war you would also likely to have picked up a number of decorations/ badges , for unit action if nothing else .
A 40 year old SS Mann or Gefrieter without any decorations would be either a late conscript or someone who really belonged in a penal battalion 
Anyway , by all means badge up as you will , this is just my personal view thrown out for discussion .

I'm 35, but i'd decided to stick with something low rank as i'm still a relative newcomer to airsoft and wanted to avoid being stuck in charge of units! My GD uniform is badged up as a Gefreiter, which is OK.
My next uniform will be a black GD panzer uniform, ranked as a Hauptmann, as i want a spangly black uniform with a nice bit of bling!
Looking at period photos, I would think that the rigours of combat tended to age people prematurely, so allowing for that I`ve knocked ten years off my actual age and I`m now 34 again. Unfortunately I`ve got no bling or rank, so it looks like the penal battalion for me

Most people seem to tell me i still look mid-late 20's, so i figure i can get away with being either low-ranked and a bit slow, or medium rank and a smart-arse.

But back to the original thought - how common was it for the German soldier to receive a battlefield commission? I thought they were even more class-conscious than the British!

Im Badged up as a Panzer Man with a Panzer destruction badge and FJ Man and FJ Lautnant without any bling other than jump badge.
I'm short so I'm therefore eternally youthful, I also am female 
not ranked, wouldn't have even been there, less theres ever a battle for berlin game then oooh yes

Problem with us germans is, quite a few of us are, slightly over 25 Over half of us woulld be Major or higher 
maybe we should do a late war urban game, and just have us all as volksturm defending Berlin...
