bit of a thread revival but i had to share,in two out of the last three events i have had punctures in inflatable mattresses causing loss of sleep and discomfort , I've got bad shoulders due to an old injury so laying on my side is really bad unless im well supported or i have to lay flat on my back.also i find the canvas camp beds too narrow,my arms hang over the edge so ive been thinking on a solution and my mind kept coming back to our bed at home with the memory foam mattress and i wondered if i could cheaply make one.so i ordered 3 camping roll mats on-line came to under £15 delivered but was not quite happy it was still too thin so i was in B+Q today ind saw a roll of bubble wrap for £16 ... put the two together with a little duc tape and it may not look pretty but its very comfy and should be well insulated as well, the air mattress i had at ill giogo pass really was surprisingly poor insulation.

Interesting dadio!

I've just spent the weekend under canvas (in what should by rights have been warmish May nights  ) and put some things to the test.

I bought an air mattress to replace the roll mat/self-inflating mattress/blankets combo I have been using to see if that was warmer/more comfy. I agree with dadio - to my surprise the thing wasn't warm and insulating at all but at least it was much less harsh on pressure points, particularly hips/shoulders so that was something at least. The bloody thing slipped around in the curvature of a modern army cot though, meaning is was hard to stay perfectly level. It is surprisingly disturbing how sleeping on the slightest of degrees off the horizontal is to me - very annoying. I suspect that dadio's solution of bubble warp/roll matts will be warm at least - loads of micro pockets of air to insulate rather than the big block of air in an air mattress.

Oh, and my new sleeping bag has been largely successful as far as warmth goes (but not perfect) but the stupid zip jamming in the material nearly resulted in the blummin being thrown out of the tent on Friday night. :banghead:

And I am also using fleecy bed socks (actually meant as welly over-socks) have done well in keeping my feet warm, which are usually like blocks of ice after sitting/standing around chatting in the evening socials.

eventually we will probably find that getting a brick layer in before hand to build a double skinned insulated brick tent with gas heating and installing a nice divan with memory foam mattress will be the most comfy way to go camping

Just a thought- how many chaps do you have in your Tent CW? More bodies is more heat!

I'd also suggest a blanket *inside* the sleeping bag... don't know why it works better than one on the outside, but it seems to.

From a larp event I can testify to the comfort of these.

However they are bulky and very heavy. These are very much for if you have your own car. Certainly carrying one of those any distance on public transport is a good way to do yourself permanent mischief! I'm wondering if a foam mattress from one of those fold-away put-me-up beds would be almost as good?

When I am going by public transport I use one of these:

But button a thermarest style self inflating mat inside the outer shell to stop me rolling off it in the night.

To the tune of "Mademoiselle from Armentières"

Napoleons army ran away, As you do
The guard stood firm for Frances Pride, As you do
They said the guard will stand and die
But we heard what their Colonel cried
It wasn't pretty I tell you.
