Soft headwear for Heer would be the M38 side cap

or, for later war, the M43 field cap with double buttons

Helmets are a better buy.
A lot of events now encourage or insist on them, firstly they make a side more easily idenitfiable and a lot of events will give you extra bandages/hits/lives if wearing one.
In combat the german soldier almost universally wore a steel helmet, even the generals retreating from the soviets in 45 are recorded as looking 'awkward' in steel helmets and red striped trousers.
Soft caps are really for when you are working or resting out of the line.

The sidecaps also aren't hugely practical 'in the field' as they are easily knocked off by shrubbery etc.
A cheap option are the ten quid plastic Stahlhelms, the only need repainting field grey (or camo) and they look fine.
Helmets keep the rain out of your eyes better than caps too
Having said all that, a fair number of people wear caps instead of helmets, but some events express a strong wish that people wear helmets.

I agree, the Stahlhelm instantly marks you out as a German and is such an iconic piece of kit - you can go for a plastic job and helmet cover if you don't like the idea of wearing steel! See here for ideas: viewtopic.php?f=45&t=16064
that would be fine as it is.
Helmet covers were quite rare (even in the SS they were issued out to assault troops only at first) and by no means universal.
In the heer and luftwaffe they were very rare indeed.
Much better just to have a plain helmet. The idea of a cover if if you are using a plastic repro.
You can get good repro german helmets on ebay for less that £40 if you shop about. If you look in the for sale section here you'll find them for much less.
If you've got a small head size, dieselmonkey has one for sale at the moment. i think its like a size 56 though....
