Hey guys,

Thought id ask the question as im looking at buying a few to use at various airsfot events including CiA's. Just wondered what people thought of them..and are they worth getting.

They are the current US Issue MRE's (self heating).

Pants - nowhere near as good as Brit 24 hr Rat Packs - once you get passed the novilty heater (I've never known one heat a pack up properly), they're tasteless and you best like peanut butter.

They didn't get the nickname Meals, Rejected by the Enemy for nothing!

just fancied trying them out. they seem in the long run the most sensible option to get. I'll get one and see what they are like.

Any menu favourite's?

I've tried most of the MRE's... most I've liked, I think only one I had was really bad.

Mind you this was a couple of years ago

A few years ago i used to do a lot of camping and bought a lot of US MRES and Brit 24hr rat packs(the old version with tinned stuff not the new freeze dried).
Both were available for £5 each at the time.
The Brit ones had loads more stuff as i believe the MREs are issued 3 for 24hrs so obviously didnt have as much stuff in them but i loved them and the heater was a very good idea and worked every time i tried them.

Wouldnt mind some more but the postage costs more now than the MRE itself :( :(

......goes to taste. I prefer MREs myself.

You can also get MRE flameless heaters, so you can cook you ratpack meals eaiser

I've only had about 3 or 4 and never complained...except when I put an entire bottle of tabasco in one meal...*cough* *wheez*

I've not tried the British Rat Pack, so I can't say if its better or not.

I've had the Dutch/French 24 hour dry rations, which weren't too bad, if you like pate and jam. Unfortunately they don't make'm like that anymore.

Brit Rat Pack defintely better than MRE although even those are ropey. try wayfarer foods-far better by far ORRRRRR just have atin of stewing steak, one of boiled tatties or veg, mix lot together along with a slurp of your favourite condiment and you've got something altogether far more palatable and semi authentic too (WW2 tended to use tinned rations). If you do want authenti flavours then Heinz soups are fine-when I worked at Museum of Army Transport we had several WW2 dated tins of oxtail soup and several other flavours (including mock turtle and brown windsor!)-some self heating too.

That might be an urban myth, but whenever I've lived off Brit Rat Packs for more than a day it took a few days for 'things' to return to normal.

It makes sense - the last thing you'd be wanting to do in combat is trotting off with the shovel! I guess the same could apply to MREs.

I've always wondered if there was any truth in the other urban myth that they used to put bromide in rat packs!!!
